As a business, the health club will be required to make a profit, which will need to be large enough to cover running costs, capital expenditure and wages. In order to do this, a business plan needs to be formulated, which will highlight any unforeseen problems and provide a model to assess whether the health club can be run at a profit.

The type and location of the club will determine its market and possible size. Members are unlikely to travel for more than twenty minutes to use the facilities in the club unless they are outstanding and access to them can be assured. The number of pieces of apparatus will allow more members to use the club, but increasing the number will mean increasing the ground space needed to house them Adequate spacing between pieces of apparatus is also a safety consideration as are the staffing levels and maintenance of the equipment concerned.

The idea is to set up a fitness club with gym facilities, as these are currently gaining popularity with the public. A pool could be added at a later stage but, at present, it will be left out because of the cost implications. The best place to site the club would be near a motorway and the Euroway Estate on the M606 near Bradford would seem ideal. King (1999) suggested that the majority of the members would have to live or work within a five mile radius of the club although it could be argued that out of town shopping centres suggest a different pattern of behaviour in that people opt for time, as opposed to distance, considerations when making choices about how to spend their day and money.
