Here are some interesting facts and figures about keeping the audience interested:
Visuals and images used
Research shows that audiences remember 40% more if there is an image.
Surprising, interesting or shocking statistics
Just a few carefully chosen stats can have a powerful effect. Not all topics lend themselves to using statistics. And they can get very boring if used too much.
A real life story or an anecdote
Not many people can tell a good joke. It is safer not to try. But you can talk about personal experience, or use case studies. Human interest stories always go down well.
An activity — filling in a questionnaire/ watching or taking part in an experiment/asking questions
Sitting still on a seat for an hour can be a killer! A chance to shuffle about or do something can be very welcome.
Noise — music — or a voice with lots of pace and enthusiasm
Lots of people respond to sound -a nice voice or music helps. If you're not careful it’s easy to lower your voice and start talking in a boring monotone.
The speaker moving about a bit
You don't want to be as still as a statue! The audience likes a bit of movement -but don't end up looking like you're doing the birdy song!
The speaker smiling/being open and welcoming
Smile, even if you don't feel like it. The audience will warm to you. A big smile will help relax you as well.
