Romany Roots: Prejudice
No Gypsies

Romany Gypsies tell of the prejudice they face just going about their everyday lives.

A fear of the unknown?

They explain what it is like to be on the receiving end of hostilities from the rest of the population.

It has been several decades since Freddy Smith and his family travelled the roads of Kent. They have given up the travelling life to lead a settled existence, but still like to go away for a caravan holiday. These days they do the same as the rest of us and book into official sites - but that isn't always the end of the story if you're a Gypsy.

No Pikies.
Additions made to a Sussex sign

Audio.Caravans - Freddy joined a caravan club, and has been turned away from sites even though he had paid in advance, instead, once he was even told to take his caravan to somewhere where "you people" go.

Audio.Work - Delaine le Bas, Cas Holmes and John Pateman related some of their experiences in the workplace. Colleagues don't always manage to keep their opinions under cover. People don't always know who they're working with, and they don't always think about what they are saying.

Audio.School - Travellers still face difficulties at school. Even today, it seems that many young gypsies still feel out of place in the classroom and feel picked on, because of their heritage.

Audio.Shopping -Hear the stories of some of the difficulties faced by Romany gypsies when out shopping. Signs saying "no dogs, no Gypsies, no Travellers" are still being put up in shops.

Audio.Cars -Hear from Claire and Bill about the mixed blessing of owning a car you can be proud of. The are asked "what are you doing with a car like that?" They are stopped regularly by the police in their new Land Rover Discovery.

If you have met with or observed prejudice the Commission for Racial Equality might be able to help...
