Sittingbourne Beauty

Pamela Penfold from Rainham has used her photography hobby to make a calendar celebrating Sittingbourne.

Pamela Penfold was so impressed with the beauty of Sittingbourne she applied her talents to the task of encouraging more people to visit the town.

Throughout her childhood Pamela visited to Sittingbourne with her mother. She remembers it as a bustling market town and the particularly good Christmas lights. However, in recent years Pamela has noticed the town slowly growing quiet with the market going, fewer shops open and the closure of the Barge Museum.

A keen photographer, she has taken photos from Medway to the Himalayas to Kenya. She says "you've got to keep the camera with you at all times otherwise you miss out on things".

All the images in the calendar were taken by Pamela and each month's picture is accompanied by a short poem by Pamela.

Pamela explains that she chose photography as a hobby because it's a way of "making a recording that will last forever of beauty that might not be around forever itself".

Pamela has invested two years of her pension money into making the calendar. She ensured the whole process of producing the calendars was local by choosing Sittingbourne based printers, Atlantic Printers.

Pamela's calendar retails at £7.99 and is available from libraries in Swale. 15% of profits are donated to the charity Breast Cancer Care.
