Action Desk Highlights 2007

2007 was another busy year for the CSV Action Desk team as they covered a wide variety of different topics, from organ donation, story-telling with the BBC RAW campaign and recycling to a love-sick tortoise!

The year got off to an inspiring start as the Story-telling Bus toured Kent encouraging adults to tell more stories with their children.

In sunny March Helena delivered a whole bin full of books to the Shorecliffe Ghurkha barracks in Folkestone following a trail offering the 70 quick-read stories to a well deserved home.In May Helena paid a visit to Canterbury High Street to meet Big Issue sellers Richard, Michael and Titch.

Romance was in the air in June as Steff and Helena went along to meet Jonathan and Frances, a delightful couple who both have learning disabilities and share a cosy cabin in the grounds of a residential home in Woodchurch. After falling in love many years ago, Jonathan proposed to Frances and they tied the knot with the company of their friends at a marquee wedding this summer.

July kicked off with Family Wanted Week as we covered all aspects of fostering and adoption. We heard some fascinating and emotional stories. Amongst the many was that of Kent father ‘Blair’ who was reunited with his children after they had been in care and Joan’s who at 84 decided to trace the events which led up to and since her adoption in 1927.

Despite the persistent rain, we managed to find one sunny morning in August to visit the Parkwood Green Gym in Maidstone as they helped to save some old allotments. A group of volunteers have grabbed their spades and got stuck in which not only encourages a healthier diet, but a healthier lifestyle for members of the Maidstone community as they keep fit in the fresh air.

Would you know what to do if you were first on the scene of an accident? September was a month for bravery and heroics as we launched our First Responders campaign, inspired by Richard Hammond’s BBC 2 series ‘Helicopter Heroes’. As Richard followed the Air Ambulance team that saved his life, we asked the people of Kent for their life and death experiences and had our local heroes encouraging us to get more involved.

This year’s Make a Difference Day was held on a crisp October morning at KCC’s Shornewood Country Park in Gravesend where a group of volunteers helped us to chop down some dense rhododendron which was suffocating the indigenous plant life. We made a huge bonfire and went back to basics by boiling water for tea and roasting fallen chestnuts. The park’s own Community Archaeologist was on hand to explain the history of a suspected bronze age barrow and to discover what is probably a 200 year old ‘linchett’, previously hidden by the rhododendron.

December marked the 40th anniversary of the first heart transplant in South Africa. To mark the day we had a BBC Radio Kent Organ Donation Day which is still inspiring many more people in Kent to join the UK Organ Donor Register. Amongst others we met 18 year old Jessica Wales who made an emotional and brave appeal for new donors in the hope that she will receive the double lung transplant that will save her life.
