Make a Difference Day 2007

Run in conjunction with the CSV Dare to Care campaign, this years Make a Difference Day saw our Action Desk team head to KCC’s Shorne Wood Country Park near Gravesend for ‘A View to the Past’ – Children’s Heritage Conservation Day.

Dare to Care is a campaign to provide children with more opportunities to enrich their lives and gain more experiences. Make a Difference Day aimed to encourage local children to learn more about Kent and its history and to get away from their computers and TV’s and out into the countryside.

Helped by a team of volunteers of all ages, the Action Desk team worked with the park staff to clear dense rhododendron in the woodland which opened up the south western views, but more importantly aimed to create a more suitable environment in which to encourage further plant life.

Spirits were kept high by using the chopped plants to build a large bonfire on which water was boiled for hot drinks and roasted chestnuts. An ideal treat on a chilly October day.

The park’s own Community Archaeologist was on hand to explain the history of a suspected bronze age barrow and to discover what is probably a 200 year old ‘linchett’, previously hidden by the rhododendron.
