Should landing charges be reduced as a way of bringing more people in? Should it be paid for from tax payers' money? We have a new live discussion board allowing you to reply to each others messages and have them appear almost instantly. The board is open between 09:30 and 22:00 Monday to Friday, outside of these hours your comments will be put in a queue for processing the next day. See the discussion and get involved now | Your Comments: | Colin, St. Martin EVERYONE uses the airport, so it should be supported through general taxation.
Anyone who receives post, reads a newspaper or magazine is using the airport to get these things (among other services) and so should also pay towards it's upkeep and make it easier for airlines to bring in people (tourists) to spend cash in the island. Although some airlines are not necessarily strapped for cash, they will become increasingly so because of war.
However, they will only want to keep their most profitable routes.
Jersey will not feature in the same priority list as the likes of Gatwick and it is arrogant for islanders who think that it does.
We have to work hard to keep good air links, they don't just land in our laps. Fri Mar 21 10:35:19 2003 Peter, St Helier Have the authorities never heard the expression "loss-leader"?
There should be NO landing charges at all, coupled with agreed low ticket prices on all flights from all airlines.
We need to write off the debt associated with the construction of the airport, forget all this "user pays" nonsense that is killing us and recognise that the airport is our lifeline - we should do as much as possible to get maximum use from it, even removing landing fees.
The airlines could easily commit to some kind of inflation-linked low price ticketing over, say, a five year period - they are after all able to mitigate things such as fuel price rises by buying fuel on a forward basis on the futures and options markets.
Mon Mar 3 10:00:56 2003 Peter, Jersey If landing charges are dropped then more passengers will come. It's as simple as that.
If the person who runs the airport can't see this then he must be blind, death and stupid. Mon Mar 3 09:59:38 2003 |
