Gorey Castle floodlit for Red Nose Day

If you're wondering why Jersey's Gorey Castle is lit up red during the evenings this week - it's for the charity Comic Relief.

The Castle is one of several famous buildings across Britain which are being floodlit to mark the launch of Red Nose day

The others include the London Eye, Norwich Cathedral and the National Library in Wales.

The Comic Relief charity raises money for people living in poverty in the UK and in Africa. Its theme is to make people laugh while they raise money to help others in need.

Helen Gray from the Jersey Heritage Trust explained that the castle was chosen by Comic Relief because it is an important visual landmark.

She told BBC Jersey: “They rang us wanting to light up the castle red to celebrate the launch of comic relief. It is part of their launch campaign where they are lighting up a number of very public buildings across the country.”

She went on to explain that: “We were one of the lucky ones who were chosen to have one of our landmark buildings lit up red to mark the launch.

“It’s because it is a very powerful visual statement, it is a landmark building and by lighting up red it forms part of what they’re trying to achieve across the UK which is to raise awareness that it is comic relief.”

And there wasn’t a huge cost involved, Helen said: “I don’t suspect it is a huge amount because it is just the screens that go across the light. It is quiet easy to change the colour of lighting in that way so it is just pulling on a few resources here and there.”
