Should we scrap school uniform?

Is school uniform a good thing or a bad thing? Have your say now...

During a debate in the States of Jersey over whether school uniforms should be exempt from GST, Deputy Andrew Lewis suggested that we should be looking at alternatives to costly exemptions.

In response to the proposition by Deputy Shona Pitman, the Deputy of St John suggested that we should instead be looking at whether we needed school uniforms at all.

He said: "If Deputy Pitman really wants to redirect funds to assist families there are better ways of doing it.

"For starters I'm very surprised no children, especially our sixteen year olds who can now vote haven't come out and said 'hang on why are we wearing school uniform anyway'.

"They don't in America, they don't in France - I'm sure lots of parents would cringe at the idea - but that's a though perhaps because it is one of the few places in Europe that has compulsory school uniform."

The amendment was lost 11 votes to 36 meaning that GST will remain on school uniforms. But the idea for scrapping school uniforms is one we thought we'd put to you.

Have your say

What are your thoughts on school uniform - good thing or bad thing? Do you think they should remain or should the islands children and teenagers be allowed to wear their own clothes?

Would scrapping school uniform actually cost more money for parents as students look to keep up with trends or would it save money on the cost of constantly replacing blazers, trousers, skirts and ties?

Sixteen year olds are now eligible to vote in the island and Deputy Andrew Lewis suggested that they might have an opinion on this issue.

He was surprised more sixteen year olds weren't saying "hang on why are we wearing school uniform anyway".

If you had a vote on school uniform which way would you vote Pour or Contre?

I think that School Uniforms should be compulsory. This way, everyones the same.

Jen
Well perhaps we can have days without school uniform. But if there wasn't any school uniform we'd be wasting all our time packing clothes or what to wear tomorrow to look cool...

Emily raspin
I dont think we should ban school uniforms, just make them less plain and boring! For example, like Japanese school uniforms, they are cute and smart! wearing plain uniforms only makes children want to customise because they feel they are all the same. Even istead of a tie for girls it can be a simple string bow, just something thats more individual.

I moved to France when i was 3 and they don't wear uniforms here. I like it. People say that uniforms can make the difference and that bullies pick on you because of your clothes. Well, guess what? Our bullies don't pick on you because of your clothes. And the difference between poor and rich, you can also make the difference with the quaility of the uniform. So i'm against the uniforms

Shrika
It doesn't look 'neat' or 'tidy' because in an effort to appear different and more independent students take up skirts, wear excessive make up, and other stuff which just makes it look plain ugly...and skanky >_>

Rob
Why do all kids complain about school uniform? I'm 14 and I don't mind school uniform for numerous reason but mainly as it brings equality to schools. This means poorer children will not be bullied for not having the 'right' clothes. Who honestly cares about it? Anyone reading this who believes that they're really cool and all that rubbish is going to be thinking 'This guy's a nerd'. And no, I'm actually quite popular at school, I just face the facts. If you believe it doesn't let you express yourself (which is just NOT true considering people do this through their actions) then back it up, most of the comments I read that say this have nothing else to them, compare that to this and I've written a load of stuff!!!

IM NOT SAYING MY NAME!!! OK?!
WE ARE GOING TO WIN!!! WE WILL BAN SCHOOL UNIFORM!! AND WE MIGHT BAN SCHOOL FREEDAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John
Of course we should keep the requirement for school uniform. School uniform ensures that everyone maintains a particular standard of dress that represents the schools ambitions, desires and standards. Children need to be helped to recognise when to adapt to the various standards required in a society and the journey through the school years is every bit learning to be prepared for adulthood as it to learn facts. Every school head should be able develop their own identity for their school and this is aided by the the school uniform. Good behaviour outside of school is enhanced whilst bad behaviour is reduced when school uniform is worn and recognised by the general public. The school uniform is a great leveler within the school population.

Also, with the greatest respect to our great teens, please lets remember that we are talking about children and teenagers - not little adults! Personalities are still being developed and created. We should be helping our children prepare for their place in society. The detail of conforming to various school rules (yes even those that one hates!) is great preration for adulthood and being part of society.

It's intersting to how many parts of the world are recognising the benefits of school uniform - whilst we have forgotten how great our education was.

i really do NOT like uniforms students shoyuld be able to express themselves

Julie
Not every parent can afford the latest fashions, its easier to have the same thing for schiool, and fashion for their own time

Chris
Scrap it, hated mine and I still maintain that years later.Itchy pile of....

Ashley F
I think it should be kept. I'm going to sound like an old fart here but they certainly need to make sure that school uniform is a bit more sensible. Two words - girls skirts. I think we all know what I mean. I'd be mortified if any daughter of mine went out looking like a prostitute.I think that's a fair enough comment.

natalie
sracp school uniform it is rubbish u always lose it in p.e lol

Greg Turner
I bet nearly everyone commenting on here are old boring people who think school uniform should stay....it should be the kids who decide and i bet you 90% probably more would say get rid of it....

Karl
Keep the uniform. Yes, it would be easier not to have it but more importantly it maintains equality for all students.

Sqn Leader C Gull
Uniforms should be kept. They give a sense of identity to school children and, kept clean and tidy, do not show discrimination between rich and poor.Possibly the States members should consider having a uniform themselves in order that members of the paying public can be able to identify those who should be looking at more pressing needs in the island.

gerty
keep school uniforms. it would be impossable to find something to wear evrymorning

georgina and idil
people say that it's cheaper to buy school uniform than buying DESIGNER clothes. Not may 11-16 year olds buy designer. It's overall cheaper to buy highstreet than school uniform!

Sarah
I think the school uniforms should be kept. The students always look smart and tidy.

kanada ken
All are equal in uniform.

AD
Please don't ban school uniforms or the cost of clothing our boys will go up!! Uniforms for most state schools can be bought very cheapy -grey trousers and polo shirts for less than a fiver. Without uniforms, the schools will become fashion houses and chidlren will be wanting more expensive clothing!

Patrick
My children hate it. So do I.

Penny Kent
Keep school uniform, but make sure it is not expensive. Identification with a school and its ethos should be important to a child. Wearing any old clothes will definitely lead to "competition" and will get completely out of hand. Uniform skirts/tunics for girls should be almost covering knees as opposed to just covering little more than their waist, as I have seen at Grainville and Haute Valle.

sharon
no, i dont think we should scrap school uniform as their a probably plenty of kids around that their parents cant afford 'cool' clothing. if we scrap school uniform it will just cause more bullying if a child isan't wearing designer clothing.

Mogsy
Many of the oft-cited benefits of uniforms do not hold water.Uniforms do not save parents money. It goes without saying that students do not wear uniform while not at school, so a full wardrobe will be required in either case. Furthermore, uniform articles are typically expensive, sometimes with exclusive suppliers being able to take advantage of a captive market. Uniforms are no leveller - students from disadvantaged families can often easily be identified owing to their damaged or incomplete uniforms.Uniforms do not prevent competition between students. If they are not competing against each other in terms of their clothing, it will be via some either means - who has the best mobile phone, the best MP3 player, etc. At any rate, I suspect the novelty of not wearing uniform would quickly wane, and competition would diminish with it.Finally, there is virtually no evidence to substantiate the claim that uniforms enhance student discipline and productivity. Count me as a Contre.

Sarah
Yes we do need school uniform. imagine the status symbols clothes would become with kids wanting the latest trends to wear the school. I think school uniform is for the best and if people shop around it ISNT that expensive!

W Hinger
Keep the uniforms! my now grown up children went to a school on the continent where there was no uniform. It was a daily task of finding what to dress them in and there was always someone elses child who had better! They don't have an identity with the school and childrens clothes cost enough, and having to wear something different each day was a task. I say yes KEEP THE UNIFORM
