Another view of Jersey

We take a look at the increasing number of blogs, message boards and Facebook groups in Jersey.

Some of the blogs in Jersey

There was a time, not that long ago, where the only source of news for Jersey was the local newspaper.

Then other forms of news and information came on the scene – Channel Television, BBC Radio Jersey, Channel 103 – these were later followed by several local magazines.

But all of these were and are still owned and controlled by large media organisations with stories from professional journalists.

However, the real change has been happening over the last few years – first the Jersey Evening Post and others launched websites with news available online for free – but again this is still news from the same big companies.

Now though the information, the stories, the ideas are being put out by the people they feature, or commented on directly by the people the story might affect.

This new wave of ‘social media’ takes a number of different forms.

Mont Orgueil

Facebook and others

One of the most common ways for islanders to share their opinions with other islanders on the internet is through Facebook groups.

There are dozens of Jersey related groups, both light hearted and political groups on Facebook with hundreds of members each.

The Say NO to GST group has more than 1,500 members; the Pound Note Appreciation Society also has more than 1,500 members, the Jersey Royal Appreciation Group with 200 members and other groups for bands, politicians and venues in Jersey.

It’s not just Facebook though – My Space has its fair share of Jersey connections but these are mainly with bands, DJs, venues and promoters.

Plus an increasing number of Jersey related videos appearing on You Tube and photos on Flickr.

Message Boards

The second main group is the message boards. For a long time the only real board of any real significance was the Jersey Beans MSN group and the Island Bass forum.

Jersey Beans Group

Photo: Jersey Beans Group

The Jersey Beans group is much more than just a message board though. It’s a community of like minded people with one thing in common – a love for Jersey.

This group, as well as sharing stories and photos have actually made the leap from online to offline with a couple of meets in the island.

Dottie, the woman responsible for setting up the group back in 1998 told me she set the site up after moving to Wales to create a way for “anyone who had moved away from, lived in or just loved Jersey could exchange messages, chat, & add photos etc.”

She told me that she is “proud to be the founder/manager and have made many internet friends over the years.”

Dottie went on to explain the offline meetings. She told me “we have had two meetings on the island ( 2004/05) which were a great success. In fact in 2004 we had a Japanese member, who lives in Japan, join us at Reg's wonderful garden.”

Since the launch of Jersey Beans in 1998, we’ve seen the launch of an increasing number of boards – most within the last two years.

Talking Politics

These have ranged from sites like Is This Jersey, Channel Islands Forum and Planet Jersey covering a more general mix of topics to specialist sites like the forums of event promoters Positiv and the CI Car Scene forums.

Inside the States Chamber

The latest forum to launch was Planet Jersey, I spoke to their admin to find out just why they felt they needed to launch.

He explained that “the reason we built this is because we did not think there was a concentrated forum on just political, finance and taxation issues that was good enough for Jersey at this moment of time.”

And went on to explain that “The timing of this forum is also with a view of this years elections. We also thought that some face book groups suggested that a general forum was needed, especially groups that have sprung up on the issue of GST of late.”

Blogs

Blogging has really started to explode as a form of journalism in the last few years and Jersey has been no exception.

There are people blogging across the island on a range of subjects, from a range of view points and bringing a variety of information and stories to their reader’s attention.

Screaming at the States of Jersey

Screaming at the States of Jersey

Is This Jersey is a form of blog, with posts from all its members and other high profile island figures – including Senator Stuart Syvret.

In fact Stuart Syvret has gone on to launch his own blog. The Senator has said he intends to use his blog to bring the views of a politician direct to the people.

He writes “I think people will find it pretty interesting to be able to read a politician’s views – directly delivered and free from the various “filters” imposed by the traditional media.”

Blogging really seemed to kick off in the island after the 2005 elections, this saw sites like Elect Jersey invite several people to keep a blog and share thoughts on the issues and sites like Is This Jersey do much the same from a different view point.

Senator Stuart Syvret

Charles Robertson uses his blog, Free Jersey, to talk about issues that matter to him in the island and Philip Balderson, MD of Webreality, writes about his latest thinking on web marketing and technology and includes comments on the islands economy.

There are other people blogging about less political subjects.

David Warr of Cooper & Co Tea & Coffee Merchants writes about his views on tea, coffee, life, the universe and everything.

The Jersey Tourism & Hospitality Industry blog has “Information and comment on aspects of Jersey's Tourism industry.”

The future

It doesn’t look like this will be the end either – with more Facebook groups being set up all the time, more videos posted to You Tube, more blogs being launched and the increasing popularity of message boards – the popularity of social media looks set to increase.

As a frequent visitor to Jersey I like jersey.blogs.comLocal politics I leave to the local:)

Gary
Question is, whats the point of using a face book substitute when we have face book? Wheyhey.com is just a clone of an already succesful and popular service. Planet Jersey seems to be very intense, which is good. Half the blog links don't work and Vue de Isles is a graveyard.

Annabel
I just wanted to say www.whey.com is not a forum site,it's Facebook, Myspace and Youtube all in one. Now has 317 members. It actually went live one night by accident. The guys were testing it late one night and realised it had gone live when they saw 6 people on the site...lol

Annabel
Heywww.wheyhey.com is much more than a forum, you can see that just by looking at the site, it has about 20 more features.I heard the Speed Dating went well the other night, an event posted on the site lol

Colette
Reply to Islander....wheyhey.com is not a forum site like the other sites you mentioned, it has loads more than a forum. The site has blogs, pictures, video, music, groups where you can create your own and invite member or simply join a group of interest,it has a chat room web cams, instant chat, events section, google maps and a lot more. It now has 305 members. I don't see how vue des isles is different,it's just a forum, nothing else

Islander
Well I taken a look at the Forums wheyhey.com is ok but too messy for me, Planet Jersey has become to "in" with itself seems to be a lot of infighting there, Vue Des Isles.com is different, it has a wide range of subjects for a new Forum and seems to cover all topic's

Colette
I've just joined wheyhey.com after seeing it on here, what a cool site. There are already 255 people on the site and it's only just gone live.

Alan R
Planet Jersey has been annoying lately. Cannot get on at the moment because it says I am banned. What have they done to their ip address selector?

Annabel
Because you can't register on facebook for the Channel Islands some friends have just set up a new community website for the Channel Islands called www.wheyhey.com It has blogs, photos, videos, music, classifieds, events, calendar, polls, forums, chat room, and instant chat as well as many other features.

You can join or set up groups under nightlife, food and drink, politics etc. It already has members in Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm. It's a great way to network and make friends in the Islands.

Nathan
Yes, I just visited Vue Des Isles and there are 2 people online. If this is supposed to be a forum for what 200,000 people? It should be closed. Planet Jersey? Well if you think the views of Stuart Syvret, Sarah Ferguson and Sean Power is jut 'club talk' then you must be living on another PLANET!

Observer
Have you seen the New Forum Vue Des Isles it takes into account all the Channel Islands well worth a look

Bean there done that
Planet Jersey is complete rubbish unlessyou subscribe to their views. It is more of a club than a debating forum. There is no such thing as debate on there only mutual backslapping and mud-slinging. The slightest whiff of an opposing opinion or, indeed, simply questioning some of the rubbish put on there and the mods fly in. If you want mature debate stay away from there. Intellectual??? Some of them are so busy trying to put you down that they haven't even read the question!

Fry Goddard
I heard about planetjersey on the radio this morning and already it has become part of my essential reading. There is so much information about our politicians and what they do that although sometimes reported on never gets fully discussed. It's now added to my bookmarks and will be read daily. Not sure if I want to talk on it yet, but I may become a member closer to the elections.

Marcus
Reads to me like CI Forums and isthisjersey are envious of Planet Jersey. Planet Jersey only started in the Spring and has already proven to be an immedite hit. I know who Jersey Boy is because I complained to Admin about his posts. He was never debating he was arguing. The posts on is this Jersey are not even moderated and you can see why they average around 3 people online all the time. CI Forums? I just went on and the last post is almost 2 days old. If that forum is so popular as some of its supporters claim, what the hell are people doing on it?

The Right Man
I reckon Planet Jersey is excellent. The only forum I cannot stand is the left wing John Cristensen form isthisjersey. I have never read so much rubbish before. Telling us that finance industry should be removed. Obviously the lunatics have taken over the asylum on that one.

Jersey Boy
I have found that unfortunately Planet Jersey is not all its cracked up to be. It doesn't allow free speech.I tried to ask valid finance questions and was accused of attacking finance. Please look at this sit and see what you think.I have now been barred and have been subject to personal attacks from which I can't defend myself. So much for free speech.I have asked RACER X to tell me where I have attacked anyone and he won't respond.

PD
Planet Jersey has got really good lately and there are some interesting posters. CI Forums looks like a dead duck.

MikeyMike
Planet Jersey has more posts than the Channel Islands Forum, but looking closer 90% are by the forum admin, that does say alot. Channel Islands Forum for me all the way.

D LE S
I also visited both sites. CI forums has 3,104 posts in the last year, while PlanetJersey has 5,423 in the last 3 and a half months. It seems that the number of people online is not an indication of popularity as Colin Stewart seems to think. I have to agree with John Peterson though, PlanetJersey is a political discussion site and so CI forums is a better place if you just want to talk beer and birds.

Hazell
Well I would love to know what they are doing on CI Forums because they don't say very much. The numbers of posts on Planet Jersey is almost over 2,000 more than CI Forums. Oh hang on, they must all be logging on and playing games on CI Forums because conversation is non-existant.

Colin Stewart
I have just checked both these sites out to see what they are like. Channel Islands Forum has 128 people online at the momnet and Planet Jersey has 19. I guess Channel Islands Forum is by far more popular. I have just signed up.

Eddie
Well I visited CI Forums and no way is there 500 people on there. More like 5 and they don't even say anything! Planet Jersey is more concentrated and serious than the other forums and that is what I like about it. But reading some of these comments makes me wonder whether CI Forums is trying to win a popularity competition! It is all a bit childish!

John Peterson
Channel Islands Forum for me, i tried Plant Jersey but unless you know anything about polotics its a waste of time

sooty
The Channel Island Forums has over 500 visitors a day, They do not con you into registering if you do not want to, you can still read all posts and information. Very well done.

Karen
I have used all the forums listed below, Planet Jersey is not a site i would go back too. It seems if you post a topic the admin does not like he will delete your post and possibly ban you without any explanation. IsthisJersey is ok , more of a blog than anything else. Channel Island Forums is very good for information and you can talk about anything other than politics.

Bob
I use the CICarScene forums ( www.CICarScene.com ), been a member since 2003! Out of all the local forums it seems the most active - well worth a visit, and isn't just for motor heads, lots of discussions regarding other issues including the states etc..

Gary
I agree with the comments on Planet Jersey, it does allow left, right and centre views, and it does allow people to discuss their opinion, which is actually interesting. I am becoming addicted. Isthisjersey is far left anti-finance and the Admin argues with people who dare to question their views on Jersey finance, so for 2 years being online it never took off.But I sure as hell do not get the reviews on CI Forums below because in my mind CI Forums as a discussion forum for Jersey and Guernsey is a failure.I joined them last November and I only ever go on to CI Forums to play the arcade games now. Discussion is either poor or non existent, and you never see people from Guernsey logging in.So where these reviews are coming from is an enigma to me.

Julie
If you want a quick natter go to the Channel Island Forum. If want a proper conversation go to Planet Jersey.

Michael
Channel Islands Forums is crap. The site itself looks like it was put together in an hour.

Archibald Le Marquand
"We need more sites that are promoting moderate views and common sense. That sure isn't Planet Jersey".Planet Jersey promotes nothing. The members have a spectrum of political views, right, left and centre. Sadly there's currently a tendency for a certain small but very noisy faction, which would seem to include Mission Man, to label as "right wing" anyone who dare complain about the Government. That's not only ignorant, it betrays an extreme bias from those who make such statements, and leaves one questioning the agenda behind such an attitude, especially when THEY claim to be the ones with "common sense"!I'll stick with PlanetJersey where the folks inhabit planet earth, and Mission Man, if you ever turn up in your spaceship on a passing visit from your home world, I'll know it's time to leave!

Susie
If forums were food the Channel Island forum would be a 99p cheesburger with a small coke and the Planet Jersey forum would be a good pub lunch with a nice glass of wine. This Is Jersey forum would be a cream egg, it takes 10 minutes to pick your way past the wrapper then when you get inside it takes 10 seconds to eat.

A Le Conte
I find Planet Jersey has a nice mix of intellectual discussion and a few with a sense of humour catering mostly for those with a political view or a hatred of politicians. Channel Island Forum is spread too thin and tries to be everything for everyone which doesn't work, but it pulls in the people playing games.Nice to see Trevor Pitman sticking up for the JDA site isthisjersey. "most widely used 'alternative' media" Come on. 2 users at the moment and one is the mod.

Jeremy
Mission Man, Planet Jersey is a lot more intellectually concentrated than CI Forums, they actually discuss topics. CI Forums has been around for almost a year and it is boring, nobody contributes to the subject matter. So it is hardly surprising somebody else built another website.

Dean
Everytime I go on CI Forums it is dead. You are obviously scared of all the other better forums out there because otherwise you wouldn't have people posting inflated reviews on here! For Jersey news discussion use PlanetJersey and for Guernsey news use WhyGuernsey. These are the main forums I use and are busier than the others.

Amy
I joined the Channel Islands Forum, very well put together, it caters for all walkes of life, its not just political propeganda

Claire
I use the Channel Island Forums ( www.channelislandsforum.co.uk ) I find this to be very helpfull when looking for information, it also covers lots of different topics, something for everyone. It loogs good.

JTM
It is up to the "Left Wing" to come on Mission Man (are there any?) ! We cannot be held responsible if these people don't get involved in 'moderate views and common sense discussion' as you put it !

Mission Man
Jeremy - Planet Jersey "intellectually concentrated"? What day were you on this site? Most on here seem incredibly un-informed, very little depth in terms of analysis and generally very right wing! We need more sites that are promoting moderate views and common sense. That sure isn't Planet Jersey.

SMG
I joined Planet Jersey last week and it is very active. It also looks more professional than all the others and the conversation is of a higher calibre.

sally
Planet Jersey is best coz people get their teeth into the news stories of the day. Better than the Evening Post!!!!!

Jeremy
I have visited all of them. Planet Jersey is the most intellectually concentrated discussion forum I have seen so far, CI Forums is good if you want to play games and discuss Saturday night, Jersey Beans is great for local interest, but isthisjersey seems to be anti-Jersey! Well from what I have read on it so far!

Barry
I think Planet Jersey is about the best at the moment. The debate on the latest scandal is a v-interesting read.

Jon Manning
I go on facebook. But only to look for girls

Dottie
The photo titled 'Jersey Beans Group' only shows a small number present that day! Altogether the online Group has over 500 members, but as with most online groups, only a small percentage leave regular messages!

Carina (Star online)
I've been a member of JerseyBeans since early 2002. I first heard about the group from an article in the JEP and joined immediately. Since then I've introduced a few new members to the site and was also made an Assistant Manager by Dottie to help with the growing membership. I'd like to mention that this article was very well written by Mr Morrison and he's completely right when he says it's a community. Alot of us have met up and get on really well. But to add to that, we've also had quite a few reunions. A friend I introduced found a cousin that she'd not even tracked down on her family tree yet. She was talking to him in chat one night and discovered the connection and he's travelled to the island since and met up. We've also had a few friends find old buddies from way back to school days. Talking of the older days of Jersey, we also have a fountain of knowledge with some of the older members who can answer numerous questions about the history of Jersey, or refer to their large quantity of local books. I love JerseyBeans and feel I always I have a friend I can chat on the other side of this screen. The group has certainly added alot of joy to my life over the years and I hope it continues for a long time yet.

Andrew Scott
I been a member of channel island forum since last july, it is a very interesting forum, all topics including political, sports, what's on where and thry have a games part and a casino! no real money, but u can earn it by posting on the forum. I think the best forum in jersey!

Paul
I use the Channel Islands Forum and find it has a wide range of topics for a wide range of people. Everything loks to be covered and gives a lot of information to people wanting to visit the Channel Islands. The games section is pretty cool too. www.channelislandsforum.co.uk

Bloggers are good, but they don't really go into debate on any issues. The latest forum Planet Jersey which I joined at the weekend looks good though.

Trevor
I think it is important to get facts right in discussing this issue. There is absolutely NO comparision between, for example, 'Elect Jersey's' website and the 'Is This Jersy?' one (I have nothibg to do with producing either, by the way).Examination of Elect Jersey and its original bloggers reveal quite clearly that it was set up to represent the interests of a particular group of people and promote their political ends - through support of politicians who remarkably claimed to be 'independent' whilst happily accepting this groups support. As I have pointed out, it would be a point well worth exploring in a blogg that just as central to their coverage of the last 2005 elections was the deliberate mis-representation of anything to do with party politics and those who could be said to hold a moderate, centre-left political philosophy generally, rather than Elect's neo-Conservative views. Is This Jersey? appears to be the most widely used 'alternative' media and seems to attract postings from across the board. I really applaud this ideal in intent but feel the problem that often comes to light is that giving the public such easy direct access to express their views carries with it the down side of some people misusing the site with incorrect material/or even unfairly attacking others. Material that can often be up for hours until a site administrator sees and removes it. These acts of 'vandalism' are to be deplored as this type of site could be the truest example of mass access 'free speech' in action available. I guess the adminstrators also have to be applauded for allowing such open criticism of their site and being willing to discus issues rather than censor them. I can't imagine this type of thing ever being permitted on a site like Elect jersey, should it be re-launched.Blogging in general has to be seen as healthy and encoraging for the democratic process!

Dean Kelly
My only comment about "is this Jersey" is that it is owned by a member of the Tax Justice Network who are enemies of Jersey, as described by Mr Walker!

Montfort Tadier
Even the Jersey Democratic Alliance have a group with over 35 members. Check it out.

Kai Kretschmann
Since my very first visit to Jersey I made my very own website www.kanalinseln.de with impressions, pictures and news from this place.
