This particular Muratti will probably be remembered for a dramatic, and very high quality penalty shoot-out, the first time ever this fixture has been settled this way on the day, without a replay. The match, and the 3,000 crowd, only really came to life in extra time, with several near misses, and Ross Crick spurning the afternoon's easiest chance, when he was clean through on goal. He chipped the ball straight at Guernsey keeper Jody Bisson. With the sides still locked at 0-0 at the end of the extra period, we were then treated to a penalty shoot out of the highest order. It started badly for Guernsey, with Ollie Mackenzie having the very first penalty saved. But when a short time later James Scott missed for Jersey it was 2-each. Guernsey's Leighton Chainey then saw his effort hit the bar and bounce down, but not over the line. So it was left to Chris Andrews to take advantage and he did with yet another well taken effort low inside the left hand post. Huge celebrations then took place among the Jersey players and supporters. Jersey's new manager, Dave Kennedy, paid full tribute to his players, particularly for their spot-kicks; "Before they even took any penalties I was extremely proud of them; they'd done absolutely everything I asked them to do."  | | Jody Bisson saves James Scott's Penalty. |
"It took a lot of guts for the boys to stand up there and take the penalties, which were fabulous I have to say - I can't praise these guys highly enough." Guernsey boss Steve Ogier conceded that the better side won on the day; "I think Jersey did a lot more to win today, and I think in all fairness I think they deserved to win the penalties. "I mean, whoever wins it it's a bit of a lottery, but I think it would have been an injustice if Jersey had come away with nothing today." That makes it 48 wins for Jersey in the Muratti series, and 41 to Guernsey. |
