Jersey broke Ireland's winning streak of 5 straight successes in the international matches between the two sides, with a 9-5 victory at the Jersey Croquet Club last weekend. Honours were shared in the first two matches, with current European Champion, Tony Le Moignan, and Jersey Captain Sarah Burrow winning their doubles match against the number 1 and 2 Irish players, Simon Williams and Fred Rogerson. Round 2 saw a key point of the game when Jersey's number 2, Burrow, recorded an excellent victory over Irish champion, Simon Williams, a player 100 places above her in the world rankings. Island debut17 year old James Le Moignan, partnering father, Tony, in his first match for the Island played solidly after a nervous start, and Jersey went 3-1 after they beat Rogerson and Nathaniel Healy. The last matches on Saturday were shared again - Tony Le Moignan beating Rogerson and Burrow and James Le Moignan losing to Williams and Healy - Jersey 4 Ireland 2. Sunday morning saw yet another levelled first round with another player representing Jersey for the first time, Gavin Carter (fresh from playing his part in the badminton inter-insular the previous day when Jersey retained the Gilson Trophy) paired up with Tony Le Moignan. This time he was on the losing side, as the local pair went down to Williams and Rogerson. Burrow, currently the 8th highest ranked woman player in the world, continued on her singles winning streak by beating Healy +7 in a close and tense match - both sides realising the importance of this point, with Jersey going into the final round of singles 5-3 up. The final roundThe final round saw the players facing their opposite ranking numbers. The top two games were best of 3 matches, with the number 3 players for both sides, Carter and Healy, playing a single game. With Ireland only 1 point behind at 5-4, it fell to Sarah Burrow to complete an undefeated singles tournament by dispatching Fred Rogerson 2-0, recording her first back to back triple peels in a best of 3, winning +20tp, +17tp. This victory saw Jersey move to 7-4, an unassailable lead. In the final match, Simon Williams, 1996 European Champion, lost to current European and Jersey Open Champion, Tony Le Moignan in a scrappy match, Le Moignan winning 2-1 (+18, -6, +8) to give a final score of Jersey 9 - Ireland 5. |
