He won his class in the Route du Rhum single handed transatlantic sailing race, making him only the second ever Brit to win a class in this tough event – the first being Dame Ellen MacArthur. Phil has now made a clean sweep of the island’s Sportsperson of the Year awards having already won both the BBC Jersey and Channel TV accolades. This husband and wife team work tirelessly with the JSAD, often with the most profoundly handicapped members of the association who will never be in the limelight. John, assisted by Carol, has run the Gateway Club at Maufant for 35 years and both of them also help the Mont a l’Abbe special gym club at their major events. Bernie has been involved in local football for since 1948, and has been part of Magpies since 1961. He still attends most of their games and although allegedly ‘taking a back seat’ 3 years ago he’s still as active in club matters as he has always been. At the age of 70+ he has ‘run the line’ on more than one occasion for the Magpies Reserve team, he’s been the president of Magpies from 1984 and is still in that role today. Nick Jarvis and James Brady are national champions in the B Division, with James stepping up a division to join Nick. The level that they are now competing at means that they have won places in the top 16 of British wheelchair tennis players. Their progress has been particularly noticeable bearing in mind the limited expose to competitive tennis due to living on an island. Sally swum the 21 mile Catalina Channel in California. Thomas GreechanJamie MacDonaldWill WaymouthTogether this Men’s Triples Bowls team became the first Channel Islanders to win a British Men’s indoor bowls title when they beat England’s champions. Simon LaurensSimon competed in a number of para dressage competitions and was named the national champion in 2006. He is short-listed to join team GB in the Beijing Olympics. Wendy swum the Channel several hours ahead of her expected time. Scott DouglasScott took the British Men’s Junior Title in the air rifle and shot as part of the Great Britain team in the World Championships. He also shot for the British team at a junior international where he helped the Brits to an overall win against the USA and Germany. Karina narrowly missed out on a quarter final place after count back in the Ladies’ Bowls Singles at the Commonwealth Games. She won gold at the British national Championships in Scotland, making her the first lady bowler in Jersey to win two golds at that level – her first came in the pairs at the 2004 Championships. Gaynor ThomasSue DingleGaynor and Sue came quite literally within inches of a bronze medal in the Ladies’ Pairs Bowls at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, losing the medal on the last end of the tie break against New Zealand. Aged 13 Melissa is one of the youngest members of the JSAD and plays both wheelchair basketball (where she is the only female team member) and wheelchair tennis. Becky excels at both hockey and athletics. She has been captain of her hockey team and regularly trains and plays with the England Under 16 hockey squad, she also plays in the Jersey Senior Ladies’ 1st XI team. Becky has also won medals in the javelin discipline at the English Schools Championships and the Jeux des Isles, plus she is ranked in the UK top 10 for her age group. Malcolm is fast becoming a fine bowler and has the measure of many senior players, and is the current Under 18 island champion as well as having been selected to play at island senior level both in and outdoors. |
