The BandsYou are in: Jersey > Introducing... > The Bands > Benny the Moth ![]() Benny the MothBy Ryan Morrison Watch Benny the Moth’s White Label session for the BBC and find out more about this funky group from Jersey. Although the band formed in November 2001, their spiritual roots go back to a summer’s night in the same year. There was a backdrop of sun, sea, surf and a night fire, a fire that attracted the attention of a moth that would later give his name to one of Jersey’s funkiest bands. ![]() The band explain the first site of ‘Benny the Moth’ like this “Though he was of slight appearance compared to you or me, he vibrated energy that rung louder than the drums and shone brighter than the fire itself. “The smoke rippled and the sand quivered. We felt that sound deep inside and drummed on into the night.” Come November 2001 the band finally got together to write the first song and in their own words “began to understand the significance of Benny’s appearance as we immersed ourselves in a new digital sound.” Since then Benny the Moth and the Erogenous Zones, to give them their full title (something to do with where the moth landed apparently) have played a wide range of gigs to an equally wide range of audiences and in an even more equally wide range of venues. ![]() These have included small pubs and clubs through to the Jersey Live music festival. In 2006 we invited Benny to join the BBC Spotlight team at the Splash for a special gig and interview to be broadcast on BBC ONE in the South West as part of the White Labels series. Help playing audio/video You can watch the full set and interview right here on bbc.co.uk/jersey. The White LabelsThe White labels are a new series of programmes on BBC Spotlight, BBC Radio Jersey and bbc.co.uk/jersey. The series is presented by David White from BBC Radio Cornwall who will be travelling throughout the South West during the six week broadcast. Each week he will be showcasing an unsigned band, hoping to make it. We catch up with each performer as they prepare for and play their gig. Then on Thursday evenings from ten, John Govier gives you the chance to hear more on his late show on your BBC Radio Jersey. Whatever your musical tastes, the White labels will have something for you. last updated: 20/05/2008 at 13:29 Have Your Sayjack johnson john trumpet JESS Darren marvel You are in: Jersey > Introducing... > The Bands > Benny the Moth |
