Boy with condom

Condoms for Classrooms?

By Claire Peters
An increasing number of school-aged youngsters in the island are suffering from a sexually transmitted infection. One response to the problem has been to put condom machines in schools. What do you think?

"What are they going to do next? Give them an hour in class to have sex!?"
Mary on the BBC Radio Jersey Phone-In

Jersey’s Annual Report of the Medical Officer of Health revealed a worrying increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particually Chlamydia, Genital Warts and Syphilis, and in the last decade the HIV rate has doubled in the island.

Researchers studying sexual health between 1990 and 2000 concluded that people are having their first sexual experience at a younger age, and the latest findings of the 2006 report suggest an increasing number of under-16s are infected with an STI.

Condom machine

The island’s Chlamydia screening program shows that 12% of 16-19 year-old females have the infection, more than in any other age group.

Earlier this week Senator Stuart Syvret, the Minister for Health and Social Services in Jersey, proposed that installing condom machines in school toilets may help stop the spread of sexual diseases in school-aged youngsters.

The idea, which at this stage has only been suggested for further investigation, has been met by disapproval from some secondary school head teachers.

It also caused a fair amount of controversy on the BBC Radio Jersey Phone In:

Mary thinks the proposal of condom machines in schools is “absolutely disgraceful” asking, “What are they going to do next? Give them an hour in class to have sex!?” She felt that children are given too much sex education at too young an age.

Jenny was “all for condoms in schools”, she believes “most youngsters on the island deserve much more trust and credit than people give them…I don’t think that a condom machine in toilets at schools is going to encourage them to have sex, I do think it is going to encourage them to have safe sex.”

Sheila was “absolutely shocked” that the “absolutely awful” idea of condom machines in school has even been suggested, believing “it would condone sexual activity in children.”

Boxes of condoms

Harold felt that children are taught about sex too young in school and that it is “stealing their innocence”. He said supplying condom machines would encourage youngsters to have sex, and the correct response to the increase in STI rates in the young was “a more moral approach”.

Alec was most certain “the education authorities would not encourage sex in youngsters over here”.

What do you think? Do you believe that fitting condom machines in school toilets would condone underage sexual activity, or maybe even encourage it?

And if so, how should the increasing infection rate be dealt with?

Or do you think that it is a necessary measure to try and combat the problem?

This is ridiculous. Africa is now advanced and sharing a portion of this disgrace but in those days sexual discipline was rewarding. Girls only have sex at marriage and are monogamous. Put condoms in schools and get every teenager experimenting.Where will this get them? More STIs of course.

penelope Page
I do believe it is a good idea, as it is not that children are learning about condoms at a too early age but that it is surrounding them, with media and television.. it is unavoidable..better to be safe than sorry.

littlemissstipes
no one has been using them ..some people think its cool not to use them. i they should put a machine in every school for their protection

Emmm.
They give tampons to girls in the toilets why not give condoms in boys in there toilets. So maybe they will see them and maybe understand more what they are about.

DaN
It wouldn't incourage us to have sex, because we could easily go into a shop and buy them but it would incourage safe sex.

Bea B.
I'm doing an opinion paper on this subject, agianist having condoms in school. For anyone that says their having sex anyway so why not give them protection, well why should the school or the government have to pay for it. It's wrong for them to be doing it in the first place so why should we be encuraging it at a younger age, and i don't care what u say but it will encurage sex.

Pvt. Randy Kirk
i think that teens like myself will have sex reguardless we have protection or not..so by having schools put up condomn machines we would be at least lowering a pregnacy rate.

yuliana perez
hanving condoms in public schools, is a great way to protect us, like students from sexual transmited diseases

Tina
I am doing a research paper on this topic. As a high school Senior I don’t think Distributing condoms in school is right. This is giving the children the message that its OK to have sex at such a young age. I personally believe that you need to be at a certain age and mature enough for it. I think its pathetic that someone would think having sex at 12 is ok. That’s just sad.I agree 100% with “peggy jonathans”

black&proud
Personaly as adad of two girls and one boy also that I have two sons my opion is to go for the idea if not your just going to have more dieases transmiting everywhere,If it dosen't work out you could just cut the program

albi
younger teens are having sex anyway. condoms aren't going to make them more active it's just going to make it safer. I personaly wouldn't mind if my kid had sex with a condom but without it would be a different story. I say it's a brilliant idea.

nikki freeman
you should not have sex in the first place because of all the sexually tranmitted diseases so think you have sex and get a disease and die or wait and live. so save your sexuallity for someone you love.

got2b
i thnk a condom machine is great, cuz think bout it stds or condom machines

April
Nah tell them to get their own!!!

Shakyra
The nurse should only give out condoms on Fridays to make sure that it is not done in school.

hottiew/abody
its a good idea to give out condoms at schools because usually teens wont pay for condoms so if they get them for free they'll use it more

victoria
great idea! now students like me dont have to be embarassed to buy condoms at the local grocery store where I know everyone in there!

loves2spooge
i say get the flavor condoms

peggy jonathans
I am absolutely disagree with the idea of providing condom vending machines at schools. Schools children should not be urged by local authority to increase more sex practices during their schools years . They should be taught to have more discipline and of course, school is one of areas to learn that.Don't get surprised when one day students can be free to make love in classroom . Sex is agift from God and it should be experienced in lovely relationship in closed room where 2 persons express their passion after gaining deeper understanding between one another

mad mad moffett
yes i agree.. at the end of the day young ppl r gna ave sex wiv or wif ot d condom.. so its beta 2 make 2 make dem mor avilable !!

Roxx
Hey well all I have to say is dat sooner or later teens must have sex and if they're gonna do it y not let them do it da right way...many teens feel embarrased 2 go 2 da drug-store and purchase a box of condoms, not only bcuz they're embarrased but bcuz they might be scared thinking someone they knowmight see them.....well @ least that's wut I feel.

Derek Douk
I believe that we should have some type of venning machine at our school. It's just like soda, bad enough that it's not good for you. However, condoms are actually decreasing the risk of students catching an STD. Think again and do you think that's bad?

Irene Glen
I think that people have thier own opions about Safe Sex and i think they sould have more Sex education in Schools.

Bob
Yeah, I think Condoms should be provided, and even if it does encorage kids to have sex, at least they will be safe! I'm all for th idea, And I'm all for sex!

johnnie
this is good

mac
i think we should have condoms at school to prevent teenage prenancy

Jazmine
Having condoms in school isnt a good idea unless teens know that it doesnt always prevent pregnancy or prevent for getting STDs... I would want to be safe, but condoms arent safe... Abstenance is the best thing... & not even from a religious aspect, more b/c i am 16 and not ready to get and STD or have to support a baby... i can barely support myself right now.

John
I agree with abi (above). I would not have used the condom machine for fear of someone seeing me. I also agree with a comment someone made about the fact that kids would be having sex in the toilets. I don't feel condom machines in schools will increase the amount using them. It is perfectly easy for a teen to go into a tesco toilet, wait till its empty and gets some no trouble. At first I would have said yes, but no, not in schools. Sixth form centres definitely as around 80% of sixth formers are sexually active.

Anna
Condoms definetly should be distributed in school. If not from a vending machine, then from a sex education class, or from couselors. Kids can be smart, and they know if they want, or don't to have sex. We can't stop them from having it if they want to! Most teenagers would be too embarrased to go to the drug store and purchase a box of condoms. But if we put them in school, it will make it easier, and it will promote safe sex at the same time. So why not have condoms in school? They're gunna have sex sooner or later, so why not promote SAFE sex in school NOW.

anon
Wow chelsea that says it all....ANY CHILD!!!!! chelsea.s. well i think condom should be avable to any child over the age of 12

trenton
well if had a chiled, mainli a son i would give him condoms but tell him that this is not giving you permission to have sex but if uyou get in that situation you have protection!

tasha
hey iam a school student and i can say that most teenages just want to do the total oposiet to what their parents want them to do. its just to rebell. have a condom machines is promoting safe sex and std free. they are going to do it any way so y not supply the safe way....

My
I think that you should wait to have sex. What if the condom did not work. You are gonig to end up having a baby. My mother will not let me have sex until I am a grown-up. I am just a 16 year old girl. You need to wait. Tell me something. Why would I have sex now. If we can wait.

Katie
Whether you provide them with condoms or not, they are still going to have sex. Surely it's better to do it safely!

Le Crapaud de la Pouquelaye
Anything that is going to enhance people's awareness of the need for preventing sexually transmitted disease or unwanted pregnancy is to be lauded. Whether or not the installation of condom dispensing machines condones underage sexual activity or not is irrelevant. Such activities have, do and always will take place, whether society wants it or not. The main thing is to prevent disease and unwanted pregnancies.

adam
hi i am 14 from the uk i think its a good idea they should only put them in high schools people say it encouraging teens to have sex well its not it potecting us from aids and infections and they say we will blow them up well your wrong most teens aged 14-16 act like adults so there is my say in it all

chelsea.s.
well i think condom should be avable to any child over the age of 12 because i kno many chidren who have unprotected sex because they are to young to go and buy some

christina.
... honestly? lets make more whores in the schools. hell why dont they just make an add for prostitution next? i mean it makes good money right? just like condoms are safe.

papa #13
i think they should; it would really help but that dont mean go have sex in school

SJ
This is sick!

alex
i am for and against the condom machine's in school. i see it as a way of encouraging teens to have sex but also at least they have the right protection. i am 14 and am a freshman...i have lost my virginity about 5 weeks being a freshman.....yes i felt a little bit pressured but i THOUGHT i loved the guy that i made love to.....turns out that we are no longer togeter and know i have to worry about having sex again.......i could get an STD, pregnent, or have the reputation of being a slute.......i'm still not sure wat side i'mleaning on the most but when the time come for out school to have condom meachines i guess i will make my decision then

lea
I’m 17 and I think that it is a good idea. The PSE classes do explain all the risks. However to bye condoms or going to brook at that age can be embracing for girls and boys. I think if they were there to get in private it would lower the number of teenagers having unprotected sex as they will have one in there wallet.

Jessica
i say that there should be condoms in school cuz u can give them out in health classes and so u can be safe and have safe sex that is what i say and it is not like kids are going to have sex just cuz they have condoms and at least they are safe!!!!!!!

James (A slightly less short sighted O.V)
Most universities have a "night-line" service on campus where a student can go and ask for free condoms at any time, day or night. If that's the norm for students aged 18 and above, why not have condom machines available for schools? People will have sex. It's human nature. Whether they have it for procreational or recreational reasons is irrelevant, the fact is, it's great. But what we don't want is an increase in the number of teenage pregnancies. Students are being taught about sex from the ages of 12 and whether it's legal or not, they will still do it. Our responsibility is to make sure they're safe whilst doing it.

SamanthaKayy
I am a kid and if somebody puts a "condom dispenser" in my resroom at school it doesn't mean that I am going to run off and have sex. It does however make it easier for me to be safe if I ever decide to. It is overall a GREAT idea.

Local
Most Pubs and clubs in St. Helier don't even have condom machines, Shouldn't they be placed in places like this first? The only thing that will happen if condom machines are placed in schools, is the kids will blow them up or use them as water ballons.

Elizabeth II
Why are there so many naive and narrow minded adults in Jersey? What happens to people once they become 'adults'? Do people after a certain age forget what it is like to be a teenager with raging hormones? We can not live in this fairytale world where we leave our children at real risk of pregnancy and STIs. The fact is that after puberty some but not all adolescents WILL have sex. I know this because I was one who chose to (as a teenager). May dad was also sexually active as school age in the 1950s too, NOTHING has changed, NOTHING will change. That's what adolescents do. The law never has and never will stop them. It's natural! Our responsibility is to keep anyone, not only adolescents safe and that means making condoms available in as many places as possible. FREE vending machines in schools yes! Course they'll me some silliness initially with the less mature ones blowing them up and acting silly - no harm done there. I think anything we can do to protect our young people from unwanted pregnancy or the ever growing number of islanders with HIV and other STIs (syphilis is now a big problem in the island) the better. QUESTION... Protect them, or leave them to have babies or even worse? ANSWER... FREE condom machines.

tiffy ann
condoms in schools wont change anything except the amont of teens getting preg. will b decreasing!! so yea

anon
I'm sure lots of people will have a comment about what I'm going to say but who cares. All I have read on here is sex, sex, sex...I agree with whoever it was that commented that re-education is the answer. What happed to making love(not sex) it should be between two people who love each other not just a quickie when and wherever...I work with lots of young people and am quite shocked at times by the one night stand attitude. Do these people have no respect for each other. However, if all else fails at the very least condoms may help prevent std's but should not be placed in schools. I was mature enough to go to the doctors at 17 (wow so old I hear them say)but at least it made me think about what I was doing.

sj
i think its silly that you have to be 16 to have sex at the end of the day people my age(15) are going to have sex! no matter what but i think young teens need to now what they could get by having unprotected sex! they need to have this talk in there pshe classes!

Tiffany
Most teenagers have a care-free 'do what I want attitude'. The best idea for teenagers is to give them evry fact possible, thenlet them choose. They're going to do what they want anyways. Help them choose the right way, or provide codoms for when they think the time is right. What you want is not always best.

Tom
In my opinion, teens should be allowed to express theirselves in any way they see fit. It should be the school districts, and the parents responsibility to inform their children about the potential outcomes of any type of sexual activity. So what I'm trying to say is teens should be educated and once they are, they should be allowed to do whatever they want.

Matt
Honestly teenagers of all ages are becoming more and more curious about sex. and Younger teenagers have been getting pregnant. It is the best way to promote safe sex because if they are not informed, then this trend will spread. Safe sex needs to be promoted at adolescence.

Ray
I think it is A very good idea we all know the legal age is 16 for sex but we all know that children do have sex and with condom machines in school it will just promote safer sex not more sex

emma baxter
i think it would be very good because then younge kids will not be getting STI/STD or aNY SEXLEY DESEASES THANK YOU

harriett
I think most peole have missed the point here we are talking about 13yr having sex not even in a stable relationship of course people have always had sex before marraige but not at this young age that is why we have to inform these young people of the reasons why it is best to wait until they are older and hopefully wiser have we forgotten it is illegale to have sex with anyone under 16 yrs of age.

Dan
If you want to encourage youngsters to stop having sex you have got to stop teaching abstenance from a religious aspect. Whether you think it is a sad fact or not, there is no denying that teenagers tend to shun religion, and look on it as something uncool. They like to rebel against it. Teaching abstenance is usually done from a religious point of view, which immediatly makes teenagers turn off the idea and want to rebel against it.

marie
I do not think fitting condom machines in schools is the answer. We have to re-educate out young people, by providing young people with codoms we are actually encouraging and putting pressure on them to have sexual intercourse you do not give a child toys and say it cannot play with them ,by providing condoms this is what we are doing.

Why are yonsters having sex at this young age, i am sure many of them want to but no one is telling them its wrong our yougsters are being robbed of their youth .We do have to take a more moral stance on this I know of young people who go around the country speaking to other young people informing them of the reasons why it is best to wait until marraige before having sexual intercourse it is amazing how successfull this has been many young people have changed their lives around.

We have to be honest on informing them why it is best to wait till marraige and this is what this group of young adults do.I have spoken to this young group and they are willing to come to jersey and speak to our young people we are in the process of organizing this i know we will not change everyones views but we owe it to them to give them the right information.

Society has failed them it is not all their doing also places like the brook centre can do more damage parents rights have been taken away because of these places i know of a parent who found condoms in her 13 yr old childs school bag and was very distressed (by the way this parent has a very good relationshp with her child) and they probably knew their mother would say it was wrong to have sex at 13 yrs of age and this is why they went to the brook centre .

When the mother phoned the brook centre to discuss this with them they told her it was nothing to do with her and would not even discuss it with her what chance do parents have in educating their children when this happens .

So by installing condom machines in schools we will be doing the same when parents are telling their children this is wrong and the govt are saying its right by providing these facilities what chance do parents have I would think very carefully before anything is decided infact why dont you try speaking to and giving parents a voice in this after all it is their child and contary to what some people may think most parents do really care where and what their child is doing

Charlotte Pool
Can someone please explain to me why young teenagers today insist on having sex, and don't wait until they are a bit older or more mature?

Millie
Grant, I think that you are sadly mistaken if you think that you will ever make kids wait until marriage to have sex. Come on, even back in the 50s/60s when it was all abstinence and waiting taught teenagers were still having sex, they just weren't doing it so openly.

Grant
This is re-freeking-dicusous. If you give kids condoms then there going to think its ok.If you teach them from the begening that sex is for marrige and give them resons biblical and non-biblical then there going to understand why its better to wait

Ashlee
I think it is safe to say that kids in school are going to have sex whether or not we teach abstinence...so by having condoms to those who do chose to have sex, will at least be having safe sex.

Emma
To be fair I think it would just encourage children to have sex and I am sure it would become just be used as a novelty item of which its products will be used to have a laugh and embarass people in and out of class.

P Lee
I think this is a good idea, as it will help prevent STDs. The just say no advice to kids doesn't work - condoms do.

Stacey
I do not think that it would be a good idea to have machines in the toilets, BUT i do think the school nurse should have them so that if anyone feels they need one, they could get one from her. Maybe a private meeting with the nurse would also be necessary so that the nurse can give advice. Perhaps the idea of compulsory "termly meetings" would encourage them to actually discuss such issues in confidence..?

Al Goen
They don't need condoms, they need education. And sexual relationships is the part of education also. Why don't they think about it? Puttin' a condom truck at a school won't make children more reliable in the sexual relationship. Education will do.

PETER
It takes two to have sex! it should be private not so every one at school should know about and brag about. i hope it never happens that condoms are in school toilets

Fin
True though, that condoms in schools would seem as if the schools were condoning sex. But, it would seem to me that NoT providing condoms would seem as if they are condoning UN-safe sex. What is their really to lose? The students that were to have sex would, whether the contraceptives are made readily available is the only true difference this would make.

Jasmine
I don't think that they shopuld put a condom machine in schools.Because that will not only let them have safe sex but they will think its ok to have sex in school.

Mary Cooper
I think it is a wonderful idea! Finally bringing back true happiness to schools! When i was at school we would sneak out for a fun time, but we didnt have protection! So having them in the toilets is a great idea!

An OV form the 60's
Sex has always been around and thank god always will be. However, STD's and unwanted babies can be prevented, so lets try. Even the Scouts provide condoms for their teenage members on camps away from home, they have moved into the 21st centery, come on education, get the machines in now, and make them free to use!

Booyaka
I think NO NO NO.But if you are going too. Remember "If you don't wear your wetsuit when you go surfing , your gonna catch more than a cold!"

Les
If they want condoms go to Brooke, at least there you will get professional advice rather than at school where teachers don't talk about it. I remember when teachers handed out condoms at school, and for the rest of the day all you saw was water filled condoms coming down the stairs and blown up in classrooms. Think about rhe circumstances within classrooms aswell as childrens health, they also need an education

Gal
back in my mums day they had condoms in school tolilets and the next thing you know kids where having sex in school. Don't make it even easier for them. OK if there are gonna do it they will do it, but schools are for learning to gain a future not to experiment in new things or starting a family.

Gabby
That's a horrible thought. NO NO NO condoms in school please. They are only kids and just because they think they are grown up and mature they're not - don't make it easier for them to have sex. They are only kids.

john richards
yes i think it's a good idea to have them in the schools but they should be free

maurice payne
give all girls the coil.

Danni
I can't believe the small-mindedness of some of the comments listed above. Do people really think that there is a way to stop youngsters having sex? They will also do it no matter what, at least condoms would make it safe.

OV of the future
To Raplh T: Victoria college is not yet co-ed. But I find your inferrence that sex would only take place between members of the oposite sex very 1930's.

Badger
Ahh Mary...an hour in class to have sex. Well that would certainly solve the truancy problems!

Debs
Great. So now us teachers will have to contend with kids blowing up condoms like ballons and throwing them around the classrooms I bet!

Adele
Even if lads do buy them as a pretence Lee at least it would mean that they own a condom just in case they do find themselves in a situation when it would be sensible to use it.

Cindy
I'm 17 and I think its a really bad idea to put condoms in schools. It kinda makes u think that teachers are ok with sex and before u know it i reckon you'll get couples having sex in the toilets and stuff. and that would be gross for the rest of us.

Lee
You'd probably get lads buying them (even if they're not having sex) just to show off and keep up a pretence that they are.

Hannah
I think that you should make it as easy as possible for people of any age to get access to condoms. STIs are not just a problem for the young, so the more places that condoms are available the better. I also think its pretty irresponsible that condoms aren't exactly cheap. I think there should be more availability for free condoms in schools. Perhaps the school nurse could be able to give out free condoms then we could go and see her in private and get some. Much more discreet that way than buying them in front of everyone in the toilets.

Lala
I think that it is a good idea. It's extra reasurence that if children do have sex at least its safe sex, what would you prefer? A teenage mother? Or one who has had safe sex?

Ralph T.
Being an OV from the 1930's, I see the school has now turned co-ed.Buying condoms on school premises infers that sex would take place on the premises; otherwise sell them off the premises where, presumably, the act would take place. Please don't lower my old school's standards.

Jack
I also read somewhere that there has been a big increase in STIs in the over 40s. Its not just the young that can be careless! Also you'll never stop youngsters having sex so don't even try.

Den
What a ridiculous idea. Young people are surrounded by enough sexual imagery through advertising, tv and magazines. To start introducing the notion of sex into schools, which is one of the only neutral enviroments left, is just asking for a disaster.

Abi
I would be too embaressed to buy condoms from the school toilets - anyone in the school could walk in and see me and perhaps I don't want the gossips in my year to know I'm having sex!
