He picked up his award at a lunchtime ceremony at the Pomme D’or Hotel, beating team-mate Ross Crick and St. Peter’s Dominic Maher, who were the other two Nominations. And to say he was suprised would be an understatement. "“It was a shock to me to get nominated in the first place, so I’m a bit stuck for words at the moment! I thought Ross would have had it in the bag. To win it with the players we have over here is a great honour.” Scott Quarrel won the Division Two award, completing a great season for champions St. Ouen. Matt Scriven (St. Clement) and Phil Helleur (Sporting Academics) were also nominated. | | Kathryn Porter |
Kathryn Porter beat off strong competition to win the Ladies Footballer of the Year title. The Jersey Wanderers player was up against Nina Woods (St. John and island captain) and Krystle Matthews (St. Clement and island goalkeeper). It was a second win for Ian Solomon, who won Referee of the Year against last year’s winner Marc le Cornu and Andy Norman. The sponsorship cheques for good sportsmanship saw Magpies win the Gold Award, picking up £1,871.53. | | Ian Solomon |
The Silver went to Jersey Wanderers, with the club receiving a cheque for £1,315.76. The Bronze award was shared between the two clubs who battled out that memorable Championship play-off, St. Peter and Jersey Scottish. The fifth highest award went to Beeches, while First Tower were 6th. One of the highlights was the referees special award for an outstanding act of sportmanship. Marc Le Cornu awarded this trophy to Richard Hebert, whose Wanderers junior side, when faced with only 10-man opposition, reduced his own side from a full complement of players to match the opposition. | | Richard Hebert with Marc Le Cornu |
The Awards ceremony was changed this year, with the sponsors Coca-Cola and Cimandis wanting the normal extra costs of a gala evening put to grass-roots use instead. The ceremony was followed by a buffet and then a screen presentation of England’s opening World Cup clash with Paraguay. |
