St. Peter celebrating their title triumph

Champions!

St. Peter are champions of Jersey football after beating Jersey Scottish in an extraordinary ten-goal play-off.

COCA-COLA JERSEY FOOTBALL COMBINATION
Division One Play-off
Jersey Scottish 4 – 6 St. Peter (aet: 3-3 at 90 mins)

It was fitting than an historic occasion, witnessed by a large Bank Holiday crowd of nearly 800, provided such a pulsating encounter at La Hague Manor, where St. Peter went in front four times, only to be pegged back each time by Scottish.

"A great game to end the season."
Jon Trigg, St. Peter's manager

Chris Hamon opened the score for the parish club with an powerful free-kick into the top corner after 14 minutes. Dave Brodie equalised five minutes later, again from a freekick.

A high cross from Hamon, not gathered by Scottish ‘keeper Steve Keane, resulted in Peter Vincenti Jnr putting St Peter back in front but within a minute and just before the interval, Chris Andrews headed Scottish level.

Scottish territorially pushed up defensively and territorially enjoyed the better of the 2nd half, but it was the parish side who regained the lead eight minutes from full time. A Kevin Crowell high cross wasn’t dealt with again by the Scottish defence, as Vincenti grabbed his second and St. Peter’s fourth.

Again St Peter couldn’t hold out, and just three minutes from the end of normal time, Scottish equalised as Andrews and Craig Leach combined for Mark Brown to score from close range.

So into extra time at 3-3, and for the fourth time St Peter took the lead, two minutes before halftime when a hopeful cross resulted in centre back Stuart Andre totally mis-cueing his clearance over keeper Keane and into his own net.

How did that miss?

With the next attack Scottish were level again as Ross Crick allowed far too much space in the penalty area and he shot low past Gareth Bailey.

In the 2nd period of extra time the Western Parish club finally made the game safe. A corner swung in by Chris Hamon was deflected in by goalkeeper Steve Keane, and with four minutes of the extra period remaining, man-of-the-match for the second time in one weekend, Peter Vincenti, completed his hat-trick after beating two defenders cleverly and finally wrapping up the title for St Peter.

It means a third championship for St. Peter, having previously won the James Marquis Trophy in both 2001 and 2002 – the club now represents Jersey against Guernsey champions Belgraves in next weekends Channel Island Club Championship Upton to be played in Guernsey.

So what a match for hat-trick hero Peter Vincenti, coming in the same Easter weekend as his Jersey Under 21 side completed a memorable Muratti win in Guernsey. “That was some play-off ! Obviously, very pleased to win in, a brilliant season, and to top it off with a play-off win is great.”

It’s been a pretty good first season in management for St. Peter’s Jon Trigg. “It was a tremendous game that had everything – the two late goals were wonderful, and all in all, a great game to end the season.”

Bob Kearsey, manager of the now-deposed champions Jersey Scottish, was understandably very disappointed. “A great advert for Jersey football, but very disappointing for us. They scored six goals and therefore probably deserved it. I think our missing two centre-halfs would have made a difference.”

just reading the opinions of so called footie fans! same they have to hide behind alias ie Fan etc thats what spoils this site! Chickens i guess! but anyhow in my opinion the jocks would have won the upton but i think to many players under performed on the day for them and the keeper didnt have the best of games which resulted in there defeat! but least they try to play football! i ask the question which team scored the better goals from a footballing point of view? but goals wins game and St Peters scoed six so they deserved to win on that alone! but the comment below about St Peters having an average set of players were right as they got stuffed in Gurnsey!

St.Peter deserved to win. There a young team and their progression over the past season has been remarkable. All credit to them. Scottish can't complain. The jocks should get over themselves and stop thinking they're a cut above the rest. Yes perhaps they played well all season, but at the end of the day, where it mattered they didn't deliver. Also, in redards to 'fan of football' the majority of those lads are island players now, and with the likes of Vincenti jnr in the team I hardly think they can be called 'average'!

Fan
Before the game Kersey said he would miss Devlin and Ferry and was worried about St Peters aerial ability. Has no one realised that not 1 goal from St Peters was scored with a head? They fully deserved to win and feel alot of Scottish fans should give them credit. When was the last time 6 goals were put past them? Lumsden and Andre were more than capable of replacing Devlin and Ferry and with Scottish taking only a point of St Peters the championship is more than deserved. Well Done St Peters and good luck Saturday!

What is Bob Kearsley all about? After 90 minutes, he didn't know what to do and that sums him up. He isn't a good manager, my gran could of organised the Jocks better than him. Look at Triggy..he has taken a average set of lads and simply organised them well to win. Well Done St Peters! FOF

amazing game - amazing crowd -good to see a season going to the wire St. Peter came from nowhere - good for club football that the same side doesn't win every year, like in the Premiership!

X Jersey Scottish player.
Scottish definately missed Devlin and Ferry, and the goalkeeper did not help matters as far as im concerned he had a nightmare, but the Jocks are a very experienced side they should be able to pick them selves up and start again, but with the likes of Andrews,Leitch & Andre going back to there old haunts were does this leave the Scottish for next season have your say, does Bobo sign for St Pauls does G. Brodie come out of retirement?

Fan.
Bob Kersey got the formation wrong he should have went with a 4-4-2 and droped Mc Nabb and played James Scott,as St Peters always play with 3 up front, anyway thats football for you were do the Scottish go from here?
