COCA-COLA JERSEY FOOTBALL COMBINATION Division One Play-off Jersey Scottish 4 – 6 St. Peter (aet: 3-3 at 90 mins) It was fitting than an historic occasion, witnessed by a large Bank Holiday crowd of nearly 800, provided such a pulsating encounter at La Hague Manor, where St. Peter went in front four times, only to be pegged back each time by Scottish. | "A great game to end the season." | | Jon Trigg, St. Peter's manager |
Chris Hamon opened the score for the parish club with an powerful free-kick into the top corner after 14 minutes. Dave Brodie equalised five minutes later, again from a freekick. A high cross from Hamon, not gathered by Scottish ‘keeper Steve Keane, resulted in Peter Vincenti Jnr putting St Peter back in front but within a minute and just before the interval, Chris Andrews headed Scottish level.
Scottish territorially pushed up defensively and territorially enjoyed the better of the 2nd half, but it was the parish side who regained the lead eight minutes from full time. A Kevin Crowell high cross wasn’t dealt with again by the Scottish defence, as Vincenti grabbed his second and St. Peter’s fourth. | | A large crowd at La Hague Manor |
Again St Peter couldn’t hold out, and just three minutes from the end of normal time, Scottish equalised as Andrews and Craig Leach combined for Mark Brown to score from close range. So into extra time at 3-3, and for the fourth time St Peter took the lead, two minutes before halftime when a hopeful cross resulted in centre back Stuart Andre totally mis-cueing his clearance over keeper Keane and into his own net. | | How did that miss? |
With the next attack Scottish were level again as Ross Crick allowed far too much space in the penalty area and he shot low past Gareth Bailey. In the 2nd period of extra time the Western Parish club finally made the game safe. A corner swung in by Chris Hamon was deflected in by goalkeeper Steve Keane, and with four minutes of the extra period remaining, man-of-the-match for the second time in one weekend, Peter Vincenti, completed his hat-trick after beating two defenders cleverly and finally wrapping up the title for St Peter. | | St. Peter celebrating their title win |
It means a third championship for St. Peter, having previously won the James Marquis Trophy in both 2001 and 2002 – the club now represents Jersey against Guernsey champions Belgraves in next weekends Channel Island Club Championship Upton to be played in Guernsey. So what a match for hat-trick hero Peter Vincenti, coming in the same Easter weekend as his Jersey Under 21 side completed a memorable Muratti win in Guernsey. “That was some play-off ! Obviously, very pleased to win in, a brilliant season, and to top it off with a play-off win is great.” It’s been a pretty good first season in management for St. Peter’s Jon Trigg. “It was a tremendous game that had everything – the two late goals were wonderful, and all in all, a great game to end the season.”
Bob Kearsey, manager of the now-deposed champions Jersey Scottish, was understandably very disappointed. “A great advert for Jersey football, but very disappointing for us. They scored six goals and therefore probably deserved it. I think our missing two centre-halfs would have made a difference.” |
