Blast TourYou are in: Isle of Man > Blast Tour > Street Dance in Mann ![]() David (back row) & Represent Dance Co. Street Dance in MannDavid Cowley I've been dancing now for 14 years. I started off in a Line Dancing class which was a lot of fun and a great chance to socialise. My view that dancing should be fun, expressive and laid back comes from these first few years. In fact, I learned my first hip hop techniques from a Line Dance video! Eventually I went on to study Ceroc, Salsa, Breakdance and Latin & Ballroom, being awarded teaching qualifications by the U.K.A. I got started in Hip Hop when I was asked to teach a dance/exercise class based on Hip Hop music. ![]() Hip Hop is more than just the music and dancing that we experience every day on the radio, tv screen and in movies. Hip Hop, which got started in the 70's in New York, is about coming together, having a good time and expressing yourself. The founding principles of Hip Hop culture are "Peace, Love, Unity and Having Fun" and I think that's what makes it so enduring. Eventually I moved on from the dance/exercise class and founded "Represent" Dance Company. Catering for all age groups from 8 years to adult, we're always happy to welcome new members. I now teach about 10 classes a week, regularly workshop for schools and youth organisations and work with other local providers to put together shows and events. ![]() There's also a lot of other dancing on the Island as well - Latin and Ballroom, Salsa, Line, Country, Traditional, Ceroc, Jazz, Tap, Irish, Ballet, Contemporary, Breakin'...the list goes on. The best starting point for anyone interested in getting involved with dance on the Island is the IOM Arts Council who have contact details for most dance teachers. Recently, I've been part of the team putting on our latest show entitled "Remix" - a hip hop musical featuring an original script and choreography. Now, it's on to the next project - if you want to be involved then get up and get dancing! last updated: 25/09/2008 at 14:30 SEE ALSOYou are in: Isle of Man > Blast Tour > Street Dance in Mann [an error occurred while processing this directive] |
