Digital radio available on island

More than 30,000 people on the island can now receive BBC digital radio.

The transmitter will deliver a DAB radio service in Douglas and the south of the island.

As well as the BBC’s existing national radio stations and the World Service, Digital radio listeners will be able to tune in to the BBC’s portfolio of digital only stations, including 1Xtra, Five Live Sports Extra and the Asian Network.

It will be the first time the island has been be able to receive digital radio.

The benefits of digital audio broadcasting (DAB) include more choice and improved sound quality.

The television signal on the island is to switch over fully from analogue to digital by the end of next year.

Mark Friend, controller of multiplatform and interactive BBC audio and music, said:

"The BBC has been committed to DAB digital radio since its launch and we are delighted to announce our plans to expand coverage further.

"We hope listeners in these areas will now discover the benefits and additional choice that digital radio offers."

Channel 4 will be opening a transmitter next year, offering an additional eight to 10 new radio stations.

I live in Douglas, I have had a digital radio since I moved to the Island 2 years ago and I STILL can not get DAB. I don't know who these 30,000 people are but it's not the capital.

Just bought DAB radio as we are in south - almost in line of vision with douglas head - NO SIGNAL at all - not even fringe!!!!!

About time, 1xtra is fantastic. Real urban music for the Isle of Man might inspire some new beats for Douglas (night club music is shocking) Check it out.
