Joe Crowley and Blackie the cat

Joe meets Blackie the cat.

Animal Sanctuary 2

In the second of our three-part-series, Joe Crowley returns to the Margaret Green foundation trust where there are plenty of jobs to do around the animal sanctuary, including giving a shampoo to the smallest resident dog, Nut.

Keeping its two Dorset sanctuaries going costs the Margaret Green Foundation Trust £850,000 a year.

That covers taking in and rehoming more than a thousand animals.

Ron and his two goats

Ron needs a new home for his goats.

Goats and pigs

We meet Dorset pensioner, Ron.

He's been forced to hand over his two goats because he no longer has anywhere for them to graze.

He's devastated, but wouldn't contemplate putting his animals down.

Fortunately the sanctuary is ready to step in.

It's not unusual for them to take in animals other than cats and dogs.

And sometimes they're a little unusual - like the two Kune Kune pigs that have been trained to sit and lie down on command.

Blackie the cat

Blackie the one-eared cat.

Blackie

Blackie - a beautiful one-eared cat that is looking for a new home after the death of his owner.

He used to be feral but since being at the Margaret Green Foundation he’s got used to people.

Not surprisingly, he’s still quite independent although he does get on well with other cats.

Apparently black cats are the hardest to place.

Last year the sanctuary took in over three hundred cats.

Some were strays, some came in because their owners just didn't want them any more and others because their owners had died or gone into care homes.

The cattery is based at the charity’s Church Knowle site, near Wareham, Dorset and they are always looking for responsible owners who would are able to rehome a cat.

If you are interested in adopting an animal then contact the Margaret Green foundation direct.
