Hull and Humber Clipper

Ken Hordon: Reporting on Hull's Clipper event

Look North Round-the-World clipper competition winner Ken Hordon is attending this weekend's clipper extravaganza.

Ken Hordon took a portable recording device and has transmitted back to us his experiences at the Wilberforce Weekender in Hull from Friday 28th July to Sunday 30th July.

As the winner of a place on the round-the-world Clipper race which begins in September, Ken looked forward to meeting some of the people attending and taking part in this prestigeous event.

Ken started his day early on Friday with an appearance on Andy Comfort's breakfast show. Later he took up a position at the Humber Quays' Press centre to meet some of the people organising the event.

Ken then joined Phil White on BBC Radio Humberside's Drive programme swiftly followed by an appearance on Look North's outside broadcast from the Marina.

Listen to his audio contributions below. As a 'crew member' of the Hull and Humber clipper he was allowed on board to talk to crew mates and then was in party mode for the crew barbeque and a meeting with the Lord Mayor of Hull, Cllr. Brenda Petch on the Friday evening.

Ken was up bright and early on Saturday morning for a special breakfast at WISE (Wilbeforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation) located on the High Street in the old part of Hull's city centre. The trophy that Professor David Richard from the institute is carrying is the one, won by the Hull and Humber clipper in the Rotterdam Wilberforce Commemorative race. The trophy has now been put on display for members of the public to view. Here, he was invited to view a petition that's to be sent around the world with the crew of the Hull and Humber clipper. People from ports along the route of the round-the-world race will be invited to sign the petition.

On Sunday, Ken managed to position himself near the bar in one of the pubs that line the streets along the route to the marina in Hull's city centre. He met up with a crew member from the Liverpool Clipper who like Ken, had won a place on board ship. Ahmed musleh spoke to Ken about what it means to be a part of the clipper event and you can hear what they talked about by using the links below.

The clippers leave Hull for Gosport

Then it was a fond farewell as the clippers set sail up the Humber on their way to their next port of call, Gosport in Hampshire. Ken reveals his feelings about the event and the next stage in his training.
