Subitango

Tango-tastic

Since the appearance of Strictly Come Dancing on the small screen, Latin music and dance has taken a surge in popular culture.

One of the shows that have had an increase in popularity is the UK tango company Subitango, which swirls into Hull on Thursday 29th March 2007.

Billed as “powerful, pulse-quickening and mesmerising”, this production incorporates a live quartet, Tango Siempre, with two of the UK’s leading tango performers.

It features Pete Rosser (accordion), Ros Stephen (violin), Jonathan Taylor (piano) and Kylie Davies (double bass), together with South American dancers Mina and Giraldo.

No stranger to the area, Subitango return to the Hull Truck Theatre this time with a historical journey of the Tango dance movement.

The show illustrates the development of this Argentinian dance-form from its origins in the Buenos Aires underworld in the early 1900s, through to the jazz-influenced 'Nuevo Tango' of Astor Piazzolla.

"There'll be different styles of the dance ranging from milonga to valse all in beautiful costumes." said violinist Ros Stephen.

"Each piece is individually choreographed and is a little story set within Buenos Aires.

"The music varies from very traditional tango music from 1930s Buenos Aires, the kind of music that was played in the dance halls at that time, through to new music which we've written ourselves as well as commissioned pieces from British composers."

"We refresh our programme each time we visit but it's the same format - four musicians and two dancers.

"It's a very simple show in that respect but we change the dance and the music so that people can see something new." added Ros.

Subitango will be performing at the Hull Truck Theatre on Thursday 29th March 2007, 8pm.
