Kaahini

Teen troubles

Award-winning playwright Maya Chowdhry’s updated production ‘Kaahini’ comes to the Hull Truck Theatre on Wednesday 8th November 2006, as part of a UK tour.

A poetic and modern play, 'Kaahini' portrays the dreams and frustrations of adolescence, coming to terms with self-image and personal identity.

Set in contemporary Britain in an alleyway next to a railway level crossing, the play tells the story of young friends caught between love, loyalty and cultural politics.

Kaahini scene

Esha loves football and dreams of winning the cup. His best friend, Farooq, only has girls on his mind and hanging out in ‘Juicys’, until the mysterious Kaahini comes along. Meanwhile, Esha’s parents worry about the future and only want what’s best for him.

‘Kaahini’ first premiered in 1997 at Bradford's Theatre in the Mill and is the first national production by writer Maya Chowdhry.

“I wanted to write a play about the complexities of identity when you're growing up." said Maya.

“I suppose some of it is based on things that happened to me when I was a teenager.”
