The group borrowed the idea from a similar group in North Yorkshire. Shirley said: "We heard of another W.I. in North Yorkshire who had done pole dancing and we thought it was an excellent idea..after Christmas to try and lose some of the weight that we've put on."

Pole dance instructor Clare Bennett says this type of dance is an activity people of all ages can take part in because, "there's lots you can do on the pole". Although she advises people to be sensible in their approach to taking it up. She said: "Like any form of exercise, you need to make sure that you see your G.P. before you start...especially if you've got any joint problems, neck problems or back problems.

After taking a twirl round the pole, Shirley said of the experience: "I think it's wonderful, it's great fun."
