Folk art is a look that can be achieved by anyone who appreciates traditional design values. It is inspired by the rustic interiors of New England homes and the simple yet beautiful furniture made by Shaker communities.

| | Wall decoration
Panel the walls with pre-routered MDF, to create a rustic 'tongue and groove' look. Paint this a yellowy green colour. | | 
| | Furniture
Decorate old furniture with folk art designs, painted to match the rest of the room. Typical designs include stars and animals. Paint these in red, green and cream. | | 
| | Candles
Make your own candles to complement the style of the room. Candle making is very easy and dyes and moulds are widely available in arts, crafts and hobby stores. | | 
| | Accessories
Use wicker accessories such as baskets and patchwork quilts to dress the room. | | 
| | Twig art
Create a twig art picture. Take some dried willow and weave it in and across a frame made of 2x1 timber. Back this with a board made from 5mm MDF. Hang on the wall for a perfect centrepiece above a real or fake fireplace. | | 
| | American table
To make an American-style console table: attach an MDF table top to a mini chest of drawers, and use banister spindles as legs. | | 
| | Wall hangings
Complete the look of the room with rustic wall decorations. Hang travel rugs on the wall, alongside pictures and traditional twig brooms. | | |
