The children from Rosyth were evacuated a few days before war broke out. wearing our labels we walked crocodile fashion to the station and duly boarded a train for Markinch. Led to the school we all waited to be collected by our new 'foster parents'.
People were very kind to us but I don't think we were very appreciative as we were very homesick. Though the early raids of the war took place near the dockyard, by the Forth Bridge, once it became fairly clear that all was quiet, many of us were glad to return home some months later. Both Kings Road and Park Road Schools in Rosyth were closed, the first being used by the boom defence/navy and the other by the R.A.F. (possibly balloon barrage chaps).
When as an adult I looked back, our hosts in Markinch didn't have any choice I understand and to have families placed in your home must have been quite a problem for some.
I also remember that the lovely people from the local Fish and Chip Shop, Italians, were interned I believe. Diane and Albert were in my class at Junior School and were well liked.
I wonder if anyone else remembers them!
