iwas sitting on the setee with my mum and dad when the prime minister annouced that war has been declared with germany , earlier in the week it had been decided that the children would be evacuated and we were keen to go ,on the friday of that week ,all the chidren had to go to the local station to meet your friends and teachers The train arrived and all the excitenent of going on a train not knowing were to . at last we arrived at whitby,then we went on the coaches to the place we would be living which was called sandsend. the lady was called mrs puckering and she had a cafe she was very kind and motherly and treat us as her own children. i had my own bedroom because i was the eldest and my niece slept in a double room with one of the other girls called jean rumble from our school. there was also 3 boys as well we enjoyed our time there. when it was bad weather mrs puckering used to take us on the beach to gather driftwood ,although we lived near the beach at home we never gathered wood all we did was dig the sand .every week we got pocket money from home 6d which equal to 2 pence now of we went to the sweet shop to spend our money for 6d we got 5 fruit sweets and 1iquice we used to sit in the garden and arrange in what order we were going to eat them 1 monday and so on till the end of the week bot of course it doesnot work out
