I was 8 years old when war started and we were living in Canning Town, London. Although we were evacuated twice for short periods I lived in the East End throughout the Blitz and the rest of the war. I believe we were the only family in our street (Eric Road in Forest Gate) to survive thanks to my Dad who got us out of our house just in time on the night of 20th March 1941.

My Dad was at Omaha Beach when our next home was badly damaged when a flying bomb fell at the end of our road (Tower Hamlets Road) 28th July 1944.
