I attended St Johns’ Primary School in Redhill, Surrey during the war. I was seven or eight years old when it began. I can remember going up and down the Air Raid Shelters. We did lots of knitting and sang songs down there. Do you know ‘Ten Green Bottles’ or ‘Insy Winsy Spider’?
In later years we stayed out during the Air Raids. Fancy that. We watched the V2 rockets or “Doodlebugs”. We would try to see where they landed. Then the boys would pedal off after them on their bicycles. They collected the pieces. If a piece had a number on it, it was very special.
