When the war started in 1939 i was an eight year old and went to Kenmont Gardens School,
The battle of Britain started over London and with Willesden Junction as a major marshelling yard the Germans were over the area every day trying to bomb the railway.
We used to watch the British planes chase the Germans and shoot them down.
This went on for a few months and our pilots were having a lot of sucsess in the air.
The Germans then started bombing the area with land mines and high explosive bombs which were very frightening to everybody.
At the rear of where i lived was the main Euston railway line and the other side was Kensal Green Cemartary which is the biggest in the U.K
Land mines were dropped and some landed in the cemertary, we used to go in and help the staff to put the bones back into coffins and help to re-bury them.
In return we could have as many conkers as we liked.
We used to go to the shelter where my father worked in the United Dairies in Scrubs Lane, every night for about 18 months and each morning we wondered if our home was safe.
When the schools started evacuation children from London we went with our mother to Aberystwyth in Wales to stay with my fathers sister and family, I went to the local school next to the railway station, I was there for 18 months and they only spoke the Welsh language, no English at all.
So much more to think about under other headings
