I was a Wren stationed on a Royal Naval Air Station (HMS 'Landrail') at Machrihanish on the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland in 1945. On VE day we were allowed on shore from the station and I went with two friends to Campbelltown to celebrate and we met two officers fro a submarine ( HMS Unruly ) who invited us on board for a celebratory drink. As I suffer from claustrophobia I couldn't stay down below for very long but it was a wonderful experience. I was amazed that those men could live below the waterline in such a confined space.
I don't suppose there were many other women on board a submarine celebrating the end of the war in Europe on VE day.
