Working in munitions in Wrexham

My name is Joan Hulmes. I’m 82 now. I got married in 1944 in Wrexham Parish Church.
When I was 21, I worked in the munitions factory, in Wrexham, in hydraulics.
We had to pack this powder into these big drums. We had to wear white suits, and shoes with flannel bottoms, in case of anything happening, like an explosion. I knew it was a dangerous job at the time.
My mum worked in munitions too, but she was in Rhydymwyn.
I used to go to the dances in Mold during the war. That was lovely. In the assembly rooms in Mold. I met my husband there. He was on Home Guard. He wasn’t well, he had a bad heart, so they wouldn’t take him in the army. My two brothers went though. They were in the desert.
