My father was in the Territorial Army before the outbreak of war in 1939. He and his unit went to northern France as part of the British Expeditional Force. They were camping and had been there for a couple of weeks when war was declared. It was decided that they were too inexperienced to remain there and had to be evacuated back to Britain. He returned to England and was sent to Halifax. He had problems with his legs and instead of being sent back to France he was recruited by the Intelligence Corps. He went to Bletchley Park where he remained for the rest of the war. I had no idea what he did there until 1997. Following a heart valve operation he started talking about his time there and as others were also starting to talk and write about enigma machines I, at last, knew what he had been doing all those years.
