Women’s Auxiliary Corps (INDIA) 1942

I Joined the W.A.C (1) Women’s Auxiliary Corps (India) in 1942 aged 17. In Jhansi, North India I stayed with my Uncle Dr Albert Gomez for a year. I think he was the Registrar of the B.M.H in Jhansi. I left to live in barracks with the other girls, as I didn’t get on with my aunt. I received my first two promotions Corporal and L/Corporal in Jhansi and was transferred to Agra, the place of my birth, where I worked as a typist in the Reinforcement Section; this section was responsible for sending extra soldiers to the front line. I met my first boyfriend in the army and though we had only been dating a few months, we were very much in love. When orders came trough to send him to the front line, I was heartbroken. I never saw him again after that and I was devastated when my friend; who’s job it was to type the documents notifying next of kin of soldiers killed in action, told me that she was sending such a letter to my boyfriends family. That’s how it was in those days, however, things moved on and I got married in 1946 after leaving the forces as sergeant. I now have seven wonderful children and even at 80, I’m living a happy and healthy life in Bristol, England.
