Songs We Remember
The White Cliffs of Dover
There’ll be bluebirds over,
The white cliffs of Dover,
Tomorrow, just you wait and see.
There’ll be love and laughter,
And peace ever after,
Tomorrow when the world is free.
The shepherd will tend his sheep,
The valley will bloom again.
And Jimmy will go to sleep,
In his own little room again.
There’ll be blue birds over,
The white cliffs of Dover,
Tomorrow, just you wait and see.
Lili Marlene
Underneath the lantern, by the barrack gate,
Darling I remember the way you used to wait.
‘Twas there that you whispered tenderly,
That you loved me, you’d always be,
My Lili of the lamplight, my own Lili Marlene.
Orders came for sailing, somewhere over there,
All confined to barracks was more than I could bear.
I knew you were waiting in the street,
I heard your feet, but could not meet,
My Lili of the lamplight, my own Lili Marlene
It’s a Long Way to Tipperary
It’s a long way to Tipperary,
It’s a long way to go.
It’s a long way to Tipperary
To the sweetest girl I know.
Goodbye Piccadilly,
Farewell Leicester Square.
It’s a long, long way to Tipperary,
But my heart’s right there.
Pack up your troubles
Pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag,
And smile, smile, smile.
While you’ve a Lucifer to light your fag,
Smile boys, that’s the style.
What’s the use of worrying,
It never was worthwhile, so
Pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag,
And smile, smile, smile.
Apple Blossom Time
I’ll be with you in apple blossom time
I’ll be with you to change your name to mine.
One day in May, I’ll come and say
Happy surprise that the sun shines on today.
What a wonderful wedding there will be
What a wonderful day for you and me
Church bells will chime
You will be mine,
In apple blossom time.
Let Me Call you Sweetheart
Let me call you sweetheart,
I’m in love with you.
Let me hear you whisper that you love me too.
Keep the lovelight glowing in your eyes so true.
Let me call you sweetheart,
I’m in love with you.
Lambeth Walk
Any time you’re Lambeth way
Any evening, any day.
You’ll find us all,
Doing the Lambeth Walk. (oi?)
Every little Lambeth gal,
With her little Lambeth pal.
You’ll find ‘em all
Doin’ the Lambeth Walk. (oi?)
Everything free and easy,
Do as you darn well pleasy.
Why don’t you make your way there
Go there, stay there.
Once you get down Lambeth way
Every evening, every day,
You’ll find yourself
Doin’ the Lambeth Walk.
For Me and My Gal
The bells are ringing for me and my gal,
The birds are singing for me and my gal.
Everybody’s been knowing,
To a wedding they’re going,
And for weeks they’ve been sewing,
Every Susie and Sal.
They’re congregating, for me and my gal,
And sometime, I’m gonna build a little home for two,
or three or four, or more.
In Loveland, for me and my gal.
Three Little Fishes
Down in the meadow in a little bitty pool,
Swam three little fishes and a mama fishie too,
“Swim” said the mama fishie, swim if you can,
And they swam and they swam all over the dam.
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
And they swam and they swam all over the dam.
“Stop” said the mama fishie,
“or you’ll get lost”,
The three little fishies didn’t wanna be bossed.
The three little fishies went off on a spree,
And they swam and they swam right out to the sea.
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu,
And they swam and they swam right out to the sea.
Bless ‘em All
Bless ‘em all, bless ‘em all,
The long and the short and the tall
Bless all the sergeants and WO ones
Bless all the corporals and their blinking sons.
For we’re saying goodbye to them all as back to the barracks we crawl
You’ll get no promotion
This side of the ocean, so
Cheer up my lads, bless ‘em all.
South of the Border
South of the border, down Mexico way,
That’s where I fell in love and stars
above came out to play.
And now as a wander —
my thoughts ever stray,
South of the border,
Down Mexico way.
She was a picture, in old Spanish lace,
Just for a tender while,
I kissed a smile upon her face.
‘Cause it was fiesta — and we were so gay,
South of the border — Mexico way.
Ay-yi, yi, yi, Ay-yi, yi, yi.
Ay-yi, yi, yi, Ay-yi, yi, yi.
The Siegfried Line
We’re going to hang out the washing on the Siegfried Line,
Have you any dirty washing, mother dear?
We’re going to hang out the washing on the Siegfried Line,
‘Cause the washing day is here.
Whether the weather may be wet or fine,
We’ll just rub along without a care.
We’re going to hang out the washing on the Siegfried Line,
If the Siegfried Line’s still there.
Oh! Johnny, Oh! Johnny, Oh!
Oh! Johnny, Oh! Johnny,
How you can love,
Oh! Johnny, Oh! Johnny,
Heaven’s above.
You make my sad heart jump with joy,
And when you’re near I just
Can’t sit still a minute.
I’m so, Oh! Johnny, Oh! Johnny
You make my sad heart jump with joy,
And when you’re near I just
Can’t sit still a minute.
I’m so, Oh! Johnny, Oh! Johnny please tell me dear
What makes me love you so?
You’re not handsome it’s true,
But when I look at you,
Oh! Johnny, Oh! Johnny, Oh!
This is the Army Mr Jones
This is the army Mr Jones,
No private rooms or telephones.
You had your breakfast in bed before — but you won’t have it there any more.
This is the army Mr Green,
We like the barracks nice and clean.
You had a housemaid to clean your floor, but she won’t help you out any more.
Sleepy Lagoon
A sleepy lagoon, a tropical moon and two on an island.
A sleepy lagoon and two hearts in tune in some lullabyland.
The fire-flies’ gleam reflects in the stream,
they sparkle and shimmer.
A star from on high, falls out of the sky
and slowly grows dimmer.
The leaves from the trees all dance in the breeze
and float on the ripples.
We’re deep in a spell as
Nightingales tell, of roses and dew.
The memory of this moment of love
Will haunt me forever.
A tropical moon, a sleepy lagoon,
And you.
Kiss me Goodnight Sergeant-Major
Kiss me goodnight Sergeant-Major
Tuck me in my little wooden bed.
We all love you Sergeant-major
When we hear you bawling
Show a leg!
Don’t forget to wake me in the morning
and bring me round a nice hot cup of tea,
Kiss me goodnight Sergeant-major
Sergeant-major be a mother to me.
Wish Me Luck
Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye,
Cheerio, here I go, on my way.
Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye,
Not a tear but a cheer, make it gay.
Give me a smile I can keep for a while,
In my heart while I’m away.
‘Til we meet once again you and I,
Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye.
There’ll always be an England
There’ll always be an England,
While there’s a country lane,
Whenever there’s a cottage small
Beside a field of grain.
There’ll always be an England,
While there’s a busy street,
Whenever there’s a turning wheel
A million marching feet.
Red, white and blue,
What does it mean to you.
Surely you’re proud,
Shout it aloud,
Britons awake!
The friendship too,
We can depend on you.
Freedom remains, these are the chains, nothing can break.
There’ll always be an England
And England shall be free
If England means as much to you
As England means to me.
We’ll Meet Again
We’ll meet again
Don’t know where, don’t know when
But I know we’ll meet again some sunny day.
Keep smiling through,
Just like you always do
‘Til the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away.
So will you please say ‘hello’
To the folks that I know,
Tell them I won’t be long.
They’ll be happy to know
That as you saw me go
I was singing this song.
We’ll meet again,
Don’t know where, don’t know when
But I know we’ll meet again some sunny day.
