Title: Land Army

I came to Lutterwoth in the land army during the war. We were billeted on the Leicester road and we had to bike miles and miles to farms. One incident on a farm in
North Kilworth we were working and we were warned about rats, at the end of the day we had caught and killed 90 rats I wrote to the newspaper about this and they published it and I still have the clipping.

“Mildred” on the Leicester Road

Bringing Fritz back from a long walk along the Leicester Road I heard this lady in the distance singing. It was such a beautiful sunny day, it was made for singing. Was it Mildred who delighted me when cycling to work carefree and happy on the Leicester Road singing “I’ll be with you in apple blossom time”? I’d like to think so. The memory of that day is still as fresh and beautiful today as it was then. I can still see the exact spot, beside the seat, where she passed me with her funny battered hat, vee necked pullover, corduroy trousers, high socks, sturdy shoes and creaky bike, off on her way to one of the farms up the road. Thank you “Mildred”.
