Early in the war in January the Grand Cinema in Kidderminster held a Christmas party for local children. It was great. I remember we had special films, and sweets and an orange each, a real treat.
When we came out late in the afternoon, it had snowed heavily and the snow was quite deep.
We had a long way to walk, over 2 miles. My brother and sister weren’t very old but we had to walk home on our own in the dark with no streetlights. As we walked crunching through the deep snow we'd pretend to be marching and we’d sing all the war time songs like “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary” but we’d sing “It’s a long way to Habberley Valley …..” We were three children on our own, it wasn’t a problem in those days but it shows how things have changed.
