This story ws submitted to the People's War site by Jane Otto of East Berkshire College on behalf of Bill Davis and has been added to the site with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

Since 2000 the Merchant Navy was finally recognised. We now have September 3rd as Merchant Navy Day.
The red ensign can be flown from all public buildings on that day.
The day was chosen because it was the date of the beginning of the war and from that day the German forces had torpedoed British ships.
At all times the Merchant Navy was in the frontline from day one to the end of the war.
