In 1945/6 when Clydebank was blitzed a man came to our house in Walkerburn asking if we could take in homeless families. My mother agreed to take in an elderly couple and their two grandchildren. Our house (Fern Cottage) was really full!
Mr and Mrs Telford and their grandchildren were real Glasgow folk. Mr Telford had worked in the Singer sewing machine factory and they loved Walkerburn. They stayed with us for two months. After the Telfords we had Polish and English soldiers to stay. Our house was never quiet during the war years.
