We had a big heavy black out curtain I used to draw pictures in chalk on it of teachers on the curtain and a picture of an Indian chief. It’s all very vivid still.
I feel privileged to have been through it. I’ve always wished I could have joined up, I always wanted to. When I was 10 I was at my aunties house, a woman came round, she asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up, I said “I’m going to join up and help win the war” — I had no idea it would be over by then, it never occurred to me as I’d grown up with it.
