Flying Officer R A Smith in Cairo 1944?

This is a photographic record of Ronald Albert Smith who served with RAF 56 squadron from 1943-1946
The attached photograph was taken in Egypt,
can anyone shed light on why he would be there when his squadron was never posted to Egypt?
