I was a child during the war. We had to go to Anderson shelter during the night when there was an air raid on. I remember one night, Bristol centre was badly bombed and we saw the city glowing in the sky.
There was an anti-aircraft gun on Purdown. It was nicknamed "Purdown Percy" as it was a big gun, the biggest around.
There was a barrage balloon site near my house. One day a German bomber tried to attack this site with machine guns and the soldiers shot back. I also remember picking up shrapnel, after the all clear.
I was evacuated to Exmoor. Ten of us slept in the Old School House. We had to go to school by car.
