When I think of my Grandad and the Second World War, the first thing that springs to my mind a story based arounh retreating from Dunkirk with the thousands of other men from the British Army.
He was waiting on the beach to be evacuated. He could see the boats far out to sea which had been deployed to retreive him and his fellow soldiers. Knowing that staying on the beach for too much longer could prove deadly, he and a number of other men noticed a half sunk, unturned vessel. Somehow they managed to make it function, and slowly they rowed out to the waiting vessels. when her reached the crowded boat, he found a small space and fell asleep. The next thing he knew, he was waking up in Dover harbour. This is just one small event in my grandad's war time history. He fought in Northen Africa, Italy and was in Greece at the time of the civil war. However, whenever I think of Grandad at war, this story comes to mind, as to me it shows a certain strength.
