This story was told to East Ayrshire Library staff during their Tea Party of 11th June 2004 by John Mitchell who landed on the beaches on D-day plus 1.

John who was a wireless operator for the Royal Signals landed on Juno beach with the Canadians and part of the beach was safe because mine disposal boys had cleared a few safe paths. The troops went a few miles inland and were held back for a few weeks – but then fought there way further inland.

John has medals, examples of shrapnel, lapel badges, cap badges etc.
