My grandfather who sadly passed away many years ago, was in the Sherwood Foresters in ww2 . He was captured in Tebruk, North Africa and taken to Italy.
There he was put in a prisoner of war camp and treated badly. We are not entirely sure about certain details but we do know that with some of his friends he managed to escape. From there he went to work for Italian peasants helping to farm the land. They did not feed him on a lot apart from raw beans. By the time the Polish army found him he was 6-7 stone and very hungry.
It was around Christmas time and my grandad was found running around in the snow barefoot in the ruins of Monte Cassino monastery chasing a wild pig. They brought him home and gave him a good meal, and also a shavind kit which we still have today.
