Mulberry Harbours-D_Day memories

Derek Jowett was in the Royal Artillary(416 Light AA Regiment)Although from Otley Yorkshire,he was based in Sussex to prepare for D_Day.The individual caissons which made up the floating harbours were dragged by American tugs out across the English Channel to Gold Beach near Arromanches. These harbours provided a protective umbrella against attack from enemy aircraft, using the guns which were set up to defend the troups who were unloading supplies and reinforcements.Unfortunately the bad weather broke up Derek's caisson and the gun he was on fell into the sea.The troops then had to put ashore,dig foxholes in the sand and cover themselves,, with tarpaulines.The troups then marched on into Holland.
