I can remember my mother Lydia Knowles holding raffles for the Merchant Navy. We used to frequent the Bowling Green Inn.
We used to hold dances once a month at the Burton Institute.
The Italian prisoners of war were stationed at the Hall in Winster.
I also remember in Darley Dale there was a huge Billet which took up the whole park, in fact they filled in the lake to make more room for all the huts.
I remember seeing the searchlights scouring the sky for enemy aircraft.
