My father Samuel Scorer, serving in the 1st Maritime Regiment, Royal Artillery manning anti aircraft guns on a merchant ship, sailed from the Thames Estuary to Arromanches on D-Day. I asked him if he saw much action and he replied "You couldn't see the sea for ships and you couldn't see the sky for planes, and they were all ours. I never saw a German aircraft so never fired my guns all day."
