My grandma, now 88, has a very special wartime memory which I think is most terrufying yet gives a real feel for the atmosphere at the time of the blitz. Every Sunday evening she used to go to the local red phone booth to call her brother who lived far away safely in the countryside at that time. This was so he could keep up to dat ewith all the events happening in our capital. One Sunday, my grandma (Winifred) heard a V2 rocket in the sky while talking to her brother and had to leave the phone booth at that moment. She could only go in two directions - left to the local pub, or right, back home. It is most certainly fortunate for her (and me) that she chose to run home because the next thing her brother heard was the pub blowing up along with the phone booth! How ironic that her husband, my grandpa, fighting in Italy against the Italians at that time was relieved!
