I was 16, so I took my little brother to Grandma’s, where he joined in a street party. I felt too old to join the kids and went to the cinema. Coming back to the party, they had a bonfire and effigy of Hitler. I took Chris home and the street opposite had a radiogram out (huge bit of furniture) and a fire and music and dancing. I went to bed just glad the war was nearly over. Just the Japs to beat.
